There is no more intense suffering for a dog and its guardian than to experience an unexpected separation. The unfortunate reality is that some guardians deliberately forsake their animals, but those who have had their dogs vanish for unexplained reasons would do anything to see them again.
A family from San Diego, California, felt the anguish of being distanced from their cherished canine companion when their dog, Mishka, disappeared. They were absolutely heartbroken as they could not fathom life without their treasured pet.
Nonetheless, they did not give up hope but pooled all their resources to search for her.
The Most Joyful Call
As per the Associated Press, the Houman family lost track of their dog while at Mehrad’s auto body shop in San Diego.
Elizabeth and Mehrad Houman promptly informed the Humane Society, provided Mishka’s microchip number, and began distributing “missing dog” posters. They also composed an emotional Facebook update with her image and the word “MISSING!!”
Regrettably, despite all their attempts, there was no trace or sound of Mishka for a period of six months. That changed when they received a call from the Grosse Pointe Animal Adoption Society (GPAAS), situated in Harper Woods, Michigan, in March 2024.
It became the most joyful communication of their lives because the staff reached out to inform them that their long-lost dog had been discovered in Harper Woods.
According to a GPAAS video, a concerned citizen alerted the Harper Woods police regarding a stray dog in her neighborhood. The officers subsequently handed the dog over to GPAAS, who scanned her microchip and found that it belonged to Mishka.
As reported by FOX 2 Detroit, on the day the Houmans received the call, they were getting ready to travel to Minneapolis to visit family. Consequently, right after landing, an enthusiastic Mehrad undertook the 10-hour journey from Minneapolis to Harper Woods to bring her home.
Most Touching Reunion And A New Ability
Once Mehrad arrived at the GPAAS location in Harper Woods, Michigan, Mishka was immediately in his embrace. It was one of the most stunning moments of their lives – a moment that made all those challenging months worthwhile.
A veterinarian from Michigan, Nancy Pillsbury, examined Mishka prior to travel and confirmed that her health was excellent, indicating that someone had cared for her well. She was set to return home.
“After a 10-hour drive, Mishka was reunited with the rest of her family in Minneapolis,” stated the GPAAS video.
As they noticed her peeking from the car, Mehrad and Elizabeth, along with the rest of the family, could hardly conceal their joy. These were the moments of sheer bliss that only our furry friends can bring.
However, what astonished, as well as perplexed the Houman family the most, was the revelation that Mishka had acquired a new skill during her time away.
“Someone instructed her to sit. She now sits on command,” Elizabeth remarked in her interview with FOX 2 Detroit.
While they speculated that someone might have abducted her in California and transported her to Michigan, to all of them, this remained a puzzle to be unraveled. Regardless, they chose not to dwell on it excessively but instead focused on cherishing every valuable moment with their cherished companion.
“It’s an absolute miracle, and we never relinquished hope. I believed we would get her back,” Elizabeth joyfully concluded at the end.
