Wolfdog Finds Belonging in His New Forever Pack

They have existed since the inception of domesticated existence. Tracking the original dogs is quite challenging. Most likely, they were either mixtures of wild wolves and domesticated dogs.

Wolfdogs are less prevalent today compared to the past, yet they can still be found as companions throughout the States. Thanks to the Apex Protection Project, wolfdogs now enjoy lives comparable to those of ordinary dogs.

If it weren’t for this Californian non-profit organization, we could only speculate on how these beings would fend for themselves.

Among the wolfdogs rescued with the assistance of Apex was Sarge. Life offered him a second opportunity, and this time, he decided to seize it wholeheartedly.

Sarge truly journeyed per aspera ad astra. His path was fraught with difficulties, but over time, Sarge embraced his role as a genuine pack member, a leader, and a delightful presence.

Integrating into the Pack

The tale of Sarge and his journey into the Apex pack originates several years back.

The official Apex foundation was established in 2015, in California, but the founders, Paula and Steve, had been collaborating with wolfdogs since 2009. Their background encompasses a wealth of experience and a prosperous career, I might add.

Throughout the years, the foundation has assisted over 400 captive-born wolfdogs with their adjustment, rescue, and rehabilitation. Additionally, they have aided thousands of wolfdog owners in raising these animals while educating them regarding these remarkable beings.

Just a year after their official establishment of Apex, Paula and Steve rescued Sarge. June 17th, 2016 was the day, and Sarge was already an elderly boy at the age of 7.

Sarge had struggled to integrate with dogs and other wolfdogs until he arrived at the Apex pack. While capacity was already at its peak, Paula was determined not to abandon Sarge.

She constantly presented Steve with his pictures, urging him to welcome this guy into their fold. His narrative profoundly touched Paula’s heart, and she recognized she had to act for this unfortunate, wandering soul.

As it turns out, Sarge was born in captivity for the purpose of being an exotic pet. One can only envision the kind of individuals who brought up Sarge. Their sole objective was to profit from selling him.

Indeed, Sarge was sold. He resided with his initial family for seven years until a tragic incident occurred. He was scaling the children’s jungle gym when his leg became ensnared in one of the rungs of the ladder.

Sarge’s family was undergoing difficult times and could no longer afford his veterinary expenses or provide for his needs.

This presented the perfect opportunity for Apex to intervene.

Despite the fact that wolfdogs require time to acclimate and form friendships, Sarge adjusted quite rapidly. The very first time he howled along with the rest of the pack on his inaugural day was when he acknowledged them, and they welcomed him.

Nevertheless, Sarge’s recovery was an extended process. His leg required surgery, which took six hours. Sarge emerged from the operating room with a titanium plate in his leg and a cast that he needed to wear for six months.

Gradually, as Sarge began to experience relief from the pain, his genuine personality started to shine through. And it was truly a wonderful one!

The pack already had a leader, Taboo, yet Sarge was also interested in the position. Thankfully, for the advantage of all the pack members, he didn’t push for it. Instead, Sarge appeared content simply being in Taboo’s presence and relishing her company as the leader.

Sarge became a genuine Apex ambassador. He journeyed across the States with Paula and Steve, representing the organization and showcasing his affectionate, playful, and nurturing nature.

Once a formidable, intimidating wolfdog, he has transformed into the largest cuddle bear imaginable!

Sarge enriched the Apex pack for eight remarkable years. He discovered how to be his authentic self.

From a hurt, anxious wolfdog, he flourished into a magnificent being overflowing with affection.

At nearly 16 years old, slightly beyond the typical lifespan of a wolfdog, Sarge gently crossed the rainbow bridge.

He departed from this realm surrounded by his beloved companions and caregivers.

“Sarge leaves behind a legacy as grand as his character, which affectionately earned him the title of “Large Sarge”. His humor, along with his cheeky and playful spirit, will forever be etched in our hearts. His grin was a gift to all fortunate enough to witness it, and we know he continues to smile as he awaits us, accompanied by Taboo and Merlin, beyond the rainbow bridge,” stated Apex in their official social media announcement.

If you ever encounter a wolfdog in distress, now you know whom to contact. Apex stands as the prime resource for these extraordinary beings, serving as a sanctuary for all wolfpuppers.
