Upon receiving an email from a breeder with a captivating subject line, ‘A newborn pit bull with no nose,’ Adri Herron, president of Sanctuary Rescue in Midlothian, Virginia, was intrigued by the situation.
As the breeder lacked any prior experience with such a puppy, she entrusted the 20-hour-old pup to Midlothian rescue the following day.
Adjustment Period
Given that Sanctuary Rescue operates as a very small, foster-based organization, the puppy, now affectionately called Goosie, found herself in an ideal environment.
Goosie’s airways were actually situated in the very roof of her mouth. Additionally, she was diagnosed with pituitary dwarfism, which meant that due to insufficient growth hormone production, she would perpetually appear like a tiny puppy.
“She literally accompanied me everywhere for the initial five weeks. I would just place her in a tote bag, and she would always wriggle to the top and escape, and I thought, ‘She’s so spirited, I’m going to get booted out of a restaurant for sneaking a puppy in,’ Adri recalled.
Another intriguing fact about Goosie is that while most bottle-fed pups only nurse from the bottle until they reach four weeks, she stuck with it until she was 15 weeks old.
Fears And Alarms
Goosie gave Adri a few frights during the initial months they spent together.
There were instances where she would fall ill to the extent that she required hospitalization, spending time in the ICU four times.
Nevertheless, Goosie did not allow this to impact her spirit. Only a few days after leaving the hospital, she would be back on her feet as if nothing had transpired.
Honestly, she deserves all the acknowledgement. Every veterinarian she has encountered has been utterly astonished by her.
Gradual Growth
Even though it took some time for Goosie to gain strength, she silenced all skeptics when she stepped onto the scale and demonstrated she weighed five full pounds!
Consequently, she developed a rather diva-like attitude.
She’s incredibly self-sufficient and adores other creatures. She delights in chasing them. The sounds of ducks quacking and geese honking always lifts her spirits.
She enjoys engaging in play-fighting with felines as well as with Adri’s personal dog that tips the scales at 96 pounds.
Despite many considering her not to be an adult Pit Bull or even capable of leading a healthy existence, Goosie represents so much more.
Nothing is cuter to me than a petite pit bull pup. I truly believed she was the most incredible thing I had ever come across!
Goosie continues to flourish in the encouraging and affectionate environment of Sanctuary Rescue, all thanks to the remarkable and unconditional love from Adri and the team.
This narrative serves as a reminder that regardless of their looks, every dog possesses a heart grand enough to embrace each and every human they encounter, and deserves the utmost admiration, forever!
