While the pair trekked through the forests of California, drawing nearer to its interior, they were unaware that a delightful surprise was in store.
As they strolled along, a peculiar sound emanating from the creek caught their attention, prompting them to investigate the source.
Upon arriving at the creek, they were astonished to discover a mother dog delivering her adorable puppies.
A Cherished Foster Home
The hikers promptly transported the mother dog, Ruby, along with her three puppies, to a nearby shelter. Just eight days later, Hopalong Animal Rescue, a non-profit animal rescue located in Oakland, California, welcomed them in.
They reached out to Thom McCallum, one of the organization’s foster caregivers, requesting him to look after Ruby and her pups, Jax, Tito, and Kirby.
Upon McCallum’s arrival to collect them, he quickly observed that Ruby appeared shy and extremely fatigued.
He welcomed them into his residence in Berkeley, striving to ensure they felt secure.
Ruby’s relief was evident as her puppies could finally bask in the comfort of a home. She was an extraordinary mother, deeply committed to nurturing her little ones.
Although McCallum was eager to engage with the playful pups, he had to exercise patience as they indulged in their much-needed rest.
He devoted considerable time to Ruby, attempting to establish a connection with her. Ruby allowed him to pet her, and they frequently engaged in playful activities together.
Building Ruby’s Trust
Noticing McCallum’s nurturing demeanor towards her and her pups, Ruby began to lower her defenses. Her foster parent was delighted to observe that the affectionate dog was starting to trust him.
“Ruby is finally asleep in my lap, and my heart is so full. The conclusion of such a beautiful day I didn’t foresee,” McCallum expressed on his Instagram.
After three weeks, Jax, Kirby, and Tito had grown more active, no longer needing to sleep constantly. The exuberant pups were thrilled to explore the house and engage with their plush toys.
They frequently showered their foster dad with affectionate licks on the face.
McCallum cherished his time spent with Ruby and the puppies. During walks, he placed them in a wagon. The pups reveled in their outdoor playtime, their joy unmistakable.
Ruby And Her Pups Achieve Their Happy Ending
With the passage of time, Ruby became bonded with her caretaker, desiring to remain by his side constantly. They developed a deep friendship. A strong and unbreakable connection formed between them. McCallum realized that parting from Ruby was not an option.
“She truly enjoys it here. I love being in her company, and I believe I provide the ideal home for her.”
Once Ruby’s puppies reached the adoptable age, they secured their forever families. The pups are now living their happiest lives in California.
Tito found a home with McCallum’s neighbor, and the kind pup spends significant time with his mother, Ruby.
Both McCallum and Ruby share a profound affection for each other. He continues to foster with Hopalong Animal Rescue. Ruby is a remarkably kind and nurturing dog who assists her dad with his foster furry friends.
