When a charming Pittie mix called Charlotte decided to snooze on a desk instead of her cozy bed, the team at the humane society she belonged to merely deemed it a quirky choice.
Nevertheless, after a period, the staff understood that there was an aspect they overlooked regarding Charlotte.
An Extraordinary Dog
Upon her arrival at the Humane Society of Sarasota County, Florida, in February 2021, Charlotte required some time to acclimate.
Having been rescued from inadequate living situations, the staff didn’t give much thought to her sleeping habits. However, they were rather taken aback when they discovered that Charlotte had completely disregarded them.
But, this wasn’t the reality at all!
Eventually, they discovered that Charlotte wasn’t neglecting them at all – she was merely hard of hearing.
Alissa Jackson, a staff member who invested considerable time with Charlotte, observed her tendency to perch on the desk as an astute method of coping with her hearing impairment.
When she was elevated, nearer to the sound she was attempting to perceive, she could actually discern what was being communicated.
“I think she preferred the desk because she’s unique, and I believe she enjoyed being elevated to possibly see over the cubicle to notice people arriving since she couldn’t hear them,” remarked Alissa.
Training
Alissa promptly began brainstorming ways to assist this dog. She concluded that it would be advantageous for Charlotte to master commands – not via auditory signals, but through visual cues.
Before long, Charlotte acquired the ability to perform tricks like ‘Sit’, ‘Place’, and ‘Flee’ just by observing hand signals.
A while later, the humane society shared Charlotte’s journey on the local Sarasota County, Florida radio station.
Due to the inspirational nature of her tale, it didn’t take long for someone to reach out, inquiring about this remarkable little dog.
Laurie Hall, a lady who was also hard of hearing, was eager to meet the pup, and upon meeting, the two instantly connected.
Permanent Home
Even after just a short time together, it was evident to everyone that these two were destined to be companions.
“She is the most loving, tranquil, and intelligent dog I have ever owned. It was our fate to become a family,” Laurie shared.
Charlotte, now surrounded by someone who genuinely comprehends her, is living her optimal life.
Engaging with her new family, relishing her daily strolls and cuddles, Charlotte no longer needs to climb onto a desk to participate in a conversation.
Now, all she has to do is simply gaze at her mom!
