Our pets genuinely rely on their humans when it comes to maintaining their cleanliness and freshness.
Even though they can perform some self-grooming, a thorough bath and some expert grooming works miracles, particularly for those with long and silky fur.
Nevertheless, when a dog isn’t regularly groomed, the long and beautiful fur can become entangled and even turn into mats, which can make the dog quite unhappy.
Sadly, Precious, the canine in today’s tale, experienced just that.
Mystery Dog
When someone delivered a clumped mass of fur to Central Missouri Humane Society (CMHS), everyone was left puzzled regarding what was concealed beneath.
The individual who handed it over mentioned that the dog was found tucked away in a small dog bed in a local supermarket parking lot.
The shelter staff jumped into action immediately, dedicated to alleviating the dog of all that matted fur.
The matting, which had become a refuge for fleas, was so extreme that it hindered the dog from walking.
Path To Recovery
The veterinary team at the shelter chose to sedate the dog so that she would not experience any pain during the fur removal. The entire procedure lasted nearly 3 hours.
In addition to the intense matting, which even forced one of her eyes to close, she also had some overgrown nails that pierced through her paw pads.
Once all the matting was shaved away, she was provided with a much-deserved bath.
Precious ultimately resembled her true self, but unfortunately, she was still incapable of walking.
When X-rays were taken, they verified that she had been in this dire condition for such a long time that her paws had become utterly deformed. It also revealed that she had multiple broken bones.
The shelter sought advice from the orthopedic department at Missouri Vet Med and the news was not optimistic.
They indicated that there were no treatment possibilities other than palliative care to ensure the dog’s comfort.
However, the compassionate individuals at CMHS were not willing to surrender their hope for Precious just yet!
Fresh Start
As soon as they shared her story, Precious quickly found a nurturing foster home.
Her foster caregivers ensured she was at ease and patiently assisted her in regaining some strength.
Her fur has begun to regrow soft and fluffy, and she can now sit up independently.
Not long after, filled with that love and attention, Precious found her forever family!
She finally received the affection and care she deserved, embracing her beautiful new life!
Practice Kindness
Displaying immense strength and courage, Precious became the emblem of a fantastic initiative named “Be Kind”!
She journeys across the nation, visiting schools and universities, sharing her story and ensuring everyone knows that they possess inherent worth. It’s alright to be unique, and that we must extend kindness to all creatures and one another!
