You wouldn’t anticipate your early morning journey to work transforming into a life-saving endeavor, yet that’s precisely what occurred for Malissa Sergent Lewis!
This compassionate individual from Harlan, Kentucky, chose a different path as she was running behind schedule for work, when she noticed the strangest thing on the roadway – a wriggling garbage bag!
Lewis was astonished to see such an unusual spectacle, but something deep inside urged her to stop and investigate. As it turned out, that was one of the best choices she ever made!
An Astounding Revelation
While taking a faster route to Kentucky Elementary School, where she is employed, the peculiar, writhing bag on the ground captured her attention.
“I took a different route, a little bit quicker, it’s a little back road. And as I’m coming down the road, in the distance I can see a garbage bag moving,” Malissa recounted to The Dodo.
She could not help but speculate about the enigmatic contents shifting within the bag, prompting her to pull over and cautiously approach it.
The bag was knotted tight, but it was clear that a living being inside was frantically attempting to escape. When she mustered enough bravery, she yanked the bag open and found a tiny, black puppy looking out from it.
“I could see something was alive inside the bag. When I looked inside of it, it was just a little puppy that looked up,” Malissa recalled.
For a few initial moments, Malissa was in disbelief. She simply couldn’t reconcile the idea that someone would forsake such a defenseless creature and abandon it to perish within a trash bag.
She quickly rescued the vulnerable puppy and ensured he was alright.
To her astonishment, the puppy bore no injuries whatsoever and was remarkably friendly from the moment she saved him. He couldn’t contain his tail’s wagging, as if he was attempting to convey his appreciation to a newfound rescuer who aided him in escaping.
The Unforeseen Journey to a Forever Home
Malissa and the pup, whom she subsequently named Hefty, established an immediate bond that day. After rescuing him, she promptly took him to the veterinarian for an examination, then shared his story on Facebook, asking if anyone knew his owners. No one stepped forward.
She remained uncertain whether this pup had been cruelly abandoned by a heartless owner or taken and placed in a bag by someone else, but in any case, whoever perpetrated this certainly did so with intention.
Fortunately, the right individual found Hefty, and that was all that mattered! Moreover, what’s even more significant – she chose to keep him permanently.
Malissa firmly believes that fate brought her and Hefty together. The fact that she took an alternate road that day and found this puppy struggling for life in that bag was a true miracle she will forever cherish.
“I truly believe it was meant to be. It was intended for him and for us as well. I feel lucky to have been in the right place at the right time,” Malissa expressed.
Today, Hefty has grown into a big boy, leaving his troubling past behind. He relishes every moment spent with Malissa and his new family, and he couldn’t be happier!
