When a worker at a shelter in Yakima, Washington, arrived at the workplace one morning, he anticipated an easy start to the last day of the week, with minimal stress.
Nevertheless, upon reaching the Yakima Humane Society (YHS) building, he was met with an unwelcome surprise. Adjacent to the shelter entry was a sealed cardboard box marked “Keep Frozen: Contents Perishable.”
At that instant, other shelter workers arrived, their hearts momentarily halting at the sight before them. Instances like this aren’t uncommon, and regrettably, they often conclude in tragedy.
Though they braced for the discovery of frozen kittens or puppies within, they aimed to stay collected and swiftly transported the box into the shelter to uncover its contents.
A Sigh Of Relief
Upon entering the facility, the staff members positioned the box on a small table in order to open it and finally unveil the mystery of its contents.
One of the employees began slicing through the tape sealing the cardboard box, while the others held their breath in eager anticipation of the reveal.
Finally managing to sever all the heavy duct tape holding the box shut, he gradually began to peel back the layers. In that moment, anxious expressions shifted to broad smiles as they beheld the true contents within.
From the depths of the box, two squinting eyes stared back at them. It was a cat, and most significantly, she was alive and thriving.
“They were relieved to see an adult cat who was alive!” Kelli Peal, the adoption manager at YHS, shared with The Dodo.
To say they were simply relieved would be an understatement – they were ecstatic because an innocent life had been preserved. It was truly a moment of relief.
Heaps Of Love And Affection
The shelter staff were perplexed as to why this cat had been left at their doorway. Nonetheless, it was presumed that the owner abandoned her there during the night for some unknown reason.
Despite their anger over this cruel deed, the joy they experienced upon seeing her sweet, innocent face prevailed.
Given that the box indicated “Keep Frozen”, they aptly named her Elsa, after the princess from the beloved film “Frozen”.
They ensured Elsa was provided with optimal conditions in the shelter, as this lovely girl deserved nothing less. While waiting for the veterinary staff to arrive, they situated her in her own kennel, where she had plenty of food and water.
Once the veterinarians arrived and assessed Elsa, they discovered a developing yet treatable wound on her side. Hence, she would require isolation until she fully healed.
Throughout her time there, the shelter staff showered her with abundant love and affection, and soon enough, this precious girl stole everyone’s heart. It was love at first sight between Elsa and the entire YHS team.
“Elsa is a favorite among the staff!” Peal remarked. “She is incredibly affectionate and tends to vocalize and lean against her kennel for attention.”
Regrettably, just as they were becoming accustomed to her presence, Elsa began to recover and was prepared for spaying, following which she could venture out in search of her forever home.
Wonderful News
While sadness washed over everyone as farewell approached, every shelter worker felt immense happiness knowing that their “frozen girl” would soon find a loving family. They also felt immense pride in Elsa, as she demonstrated remarkable resilience despite her traumatic experiences.
“She’s an incredible cat who has endured a lot,” Peal noted, “yet she displays no signs of shyness and seems to have no residual effects from her abandonment.”
The pinnacle of this entire tale came with the most positive news for this feline lady. Although the shelter has yet to make an official announcement, one of the employees mentioned in a comment that Elsa is awaiting her forever home.
“Elsa has a pending adoption with a wonderful family. ❤️,” Rachel Vincent commented under the YHS Facebook post.
Just as she has overcome all previous challenges with the love of her rescuers, we have no doubt that Elsa will thrive in this new chapter of her life.
