A mother’s intuition is perhaps one of the most extraordinary occurrences that we observe in all creatures, and canines are no exception!
As she was about to bring her puppies into the world, this Pittie mother was filled with fear!
She was determined to protect her litter, thus she opted to give birth in an abandoned dwelling in St. Louis, Missouri. Unbeknownst to her, seeking “safety” in a home devoid of basic needs was not an optimal decision!
All by herself with her puppies, lacking food and water, in utter darkness, the dog mom required assistance – immediately!
Assistance Came When Mama Dog Needed It Most
Fortunately, the kind individuals at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, located in St. Louis, Missouri, were informed about the wandering Pittie mother concealed in an abandoned home.
Natalie and Donna, volunteers from this rescue who have been involved in numerous rescue operations, arrived at the scene searching for the homeless Pittie and her pups.
They called out for the dog multiple times, offering treats until they finally spotted a small head emerging from a mattress. She appeared severely malnourished and thin, and without hesitation, she went for the snacks.
Once she emerged from the bed, Natalie and Donna placed her in their jeep, then returned for her puppies.
Six Robust, Plump Puppies
It was cold and dark, but they somehow succeeded in extracting all of the puppies from the mattress. There were six healthy newborns hidden there, and one that sadly crossed the rainbow bridge shortly thereafter.
Stray Rescue of St. Louis:
“One mama, 6 babies, and another one who had crossed the rainbow bridge. They were living in this pitch black, very cold, boarded up house. She was so hungry and thirsty, and her little babies have skin infections. But, they are all safe now, thank God.”
Remarkably, all six puppies were in great condition, given their circumstances. Except for a small skin infection, they were all plump and well-nourished.
“Mom actually did an outstanding job with these puppies. For being as thin as she was, the puppies were all plump and content,” commented Donna
They placed the puppies in a crate and situated them in the jeep, right beside their mom.
Vicky Veggie Was A Welcoming Girl Right From The Start
In spite of all the hardship faced by this Pittie family, the mother, later named Vicky Veggie, displayed friendliness right from the outset!
Unlike many dogs Natalie and Donna have rescued, she showed no signs of aggression to protect her puppies. It was as though she instantly understood that these humans were there to assist – not to threaten her or her little ones.
The entire family was well cared for. When the SRSL team ensured that the puppies were weaned from their mother, they sent Vicky Veggie to a foster home, so that when the moment arrives, she would be ready for her forever family.
In contrast, the puppies were watched over for a bit longer due to their treatment for infection. Ultimately, all of them found loving homes!
Settling In A Well-Deserved Forever Home
After a few months in a foster environment, Vicky Veggie was adopted into the most wonderful family! She was embraced with open arms by her new humans, and she responded enthusiastically!
“Vicky Veggie is adopted into the most affectionate family in the world. They provide her with all the hugs and snuggles she has been yearning for. Congratulations, sweet girl… we couldn’t be happier for you,” stated SRST in their Facebook post.
Once a stray dog mother coping with numerous anxieties, she is now the most joyous doggo on the planet!
