While we have concentrated on narratives with favorable conclusions, we cannot dismiss the unfortunate ones that occur daily. For each joyful dog, there exists a sorrowful one, and that remains a distressing reality.
Perhaps more tragic is the fact that the majority of these sorrowful tales result from human actions, which is truly disheartening. It remains a mystery what drives individuals to commit such horrific acts against innocent beings.
Another distressing account unfolded some time ago in Crete, Greece involving a German Shepherd who is now known as Rex. When a rescuer from Takis Shelter ascended the hill with a police officer alerted to a dog tethered to a tree, he did not anticipate encountering such a heartbreaking sight.
The dog had been confined there for several days, likely intended to intimidate the sheep. He was pathetically leaning against a rock, showing signs of exhaustion and trauma. He was secured there with a small amount of food, yet lacked any drinking water or shelter. The dog was exposed to the harshness of the cold and rain.
Whoever abandoned Rex in that state showed no concern for the fate of the poor animal. He was parched, chilly, and forced to rest in his own waste.
Somehow managing to muster his German Shepherd spirit, Rex remained composed and allowed the rescuers to approach him. It seemed as though he sensed the kindness of the two men coming forth to save him. The expression in Rex’s eyes conveyed more gratitude than a thousand thank yous.
Whoever bound Rex with a one-meter chain was fully aware that he could not access food, water, or shelter.
The rescuer spoke soothingly to Rex, reassuring him that he would be well cared for from this point onward. As the officer returned with fresh water for Rex, they understood he was in a state of severe dehydration.
Rex was then taken back to the vehicle, where he leaped onto the passenger door, eager to escape that dreadful location. We cannot fault him for that. He was fortunate to be rescued by such compassionate individuals.
The first action Rex took upon arriving at the shelter was to plunge his head into the water bucket. He drank for over three minutes straight! Can you fathom how thirsty this poor lad was?
Rex is flourishing now. He enjoys companionship, sustenance, hydration, safe lodging, and most significantly, individuals who care about his welfare. Although he may appear a bit lean for a German Shepherd, with a few months of care, he will transform into a joyful and robust dog.
He is now thriving alongside his new friends in Crete, Greece. We hope that one day someone will see how wonderful Rex is and offer him a forever home.
Rex’s tale serves to raise awareness and advocate for many dogs that are unable to rescue themselves from dire situations. No dog deserves to endure what Rex had to face.
