The issue of overcrowded shelters, neglected dogs, and strays is not a recent development. Sadly, it is part of our reality. Furthermore, some shelters face so many challenges that the euthanasia rate approaches nearly 100%.

Nonetheless, there remain inspiring examples of individuals and organizations dedicated to avoiding the direst outcomes, often operating with minimal resources.

A prime illustration is Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), a shelter situated in Austin, Texas, which has achieved a remarkable 97% save rate throughout the years.

One of their numerous success stories involves a deserted pregnant dog who was kicked by her owner when she needed him most. Despite the obstacles and considerable expenses, the staff at this shelter went above and beyond to restore joy to the dog’s life.

Couldn’t Even Walk

A canine named Meter Maid was discovered by animal control in a neighborhood in Austin, Texas before being taken to the municipal shelter. Due to her advanced pregnancy, they contacted APA! for assistance, and the team promptly responded.

Upon her transfer to their facility, efforts were made to ensure her comfort as best as possible. Unfortunately, this dog remained highly anxious and despondent, and in addition, she was so pregnant that she couldn’t walk at all

Despite the challenging circumstances, the shelter staff was determined not to abandon her. They recognized that fresh air and sunshine are crucial for all dogs, so they routinely transported her outdoors in a wagon.

Besides supporting her physical recovery, these wonderful individuals also surrounded her with affection to help her improve emotionally

“Our teams showed her all the love as she began to warm up,” an APA! representative stated to Newsweek

Gradually, all her injuries healed, and the ecstatic moment that every mother anticipates drew near.

After 16 days of round-the-clock care for Meter Maid, the awaited moment finally arrived. The shelter staff was so thrilled that they couldn’t help but announce the news to their audience in an Instagram post

“☀️ This #AmplifyAustinDay, the sun is shining on the best mama dog: Meter Maid, who just gave birth to 11 puppies!” they stated.

The astonishing total of 11 puppies amazed the staff more than anything, clarifying the reason for one of the largest bellies they had encountered in their careers. Nevertheless, they rejoiced for this canine family and took every measure to guarantee the puppies had a joyful upbringing.

They also posted a video documenting Meter Maid’s pregnancy journey on their TikTok, which garnered considerable attention, and the public was elated with her joyful conclusion.

☀️ This AmplifyAustinDay, the sun is shining on the best mama dog: Meter Maid, who just gave birth to 11 puppies! She might not need much help doting on her little ones, but we do need your help to reach our $250,000 Amplify Austin goal before 6PM tomorrow!  While mama dogs like Meter Maid do a lot of the work raising their pups, it still costs us about $1,000 to feed, vaccinate, and house a family of dogs for several weeks– and most families don’t comprise 11 puppies!  Your contribution goes twice as far this Amplify Day, since every dollar is MATCHED up to $100K courtesy of a generous, anonymous donor. Even a donation of $25 today makes a significant impact, turning into $50 to vaccinate a litter of puppies like this one!  Link in bio.  #austinpetsalive #austin #texas #austintx #ilivehereigivehere #amplifyaustin #amplifylifesaving #puppies #puppy #momdog #pregnantdog #shelterdog #dogsofinstagram #funny #cute

The shelter staff assigned names to the puppies that reflected their mother’s: Parallel Park, Speed Limit, Parking Ticket, Street Parking, Stop Sign, Sidewalk, Construction Zone, Detour, Valet, Driveway, and Crosswalk.

The APA! team is optimistic that the puppies will be ready for adoption in a month, while the mother will be available a week or two after them. They aspire to find loving and responsible families who will never betray them.

Meanwhile, we hope this narrative has at least raised public awareness regarding the consequences of irresponsible actions, and that this happy conclusion has inspired all compassionate individuals to persist in their efforts to assist animals in need.
