Dogs are recognized for their deep connections, particularly with their cherished humans. Nonetheless, canines can also develop strong bonds with each other, especially if they belong to the same household.
The best evidence of this is two Pit Bull-mix sisters who cohabited for most of their lives until one fateful day when they were forcibly separated. The pregnant sibling found a foster home, yet despite the affection showered upon her, she was despondent due to the absence of her sister.
Fortunately, thanks to compassionate individuals, they were reunited, and the expectant mother dog experienced her most joyful moment alongside her greatest ally in life.
Couldn’t Live Without Each Other
A canine named Erica was surrendered at a shelter in New York in September 2023. Her owner was without a home, therefore he was unable to care for her when she became heavily pregnant.
The New York-based shelter swiftly reached out to the rescue organization, Twenty Paws Rescue, located in Brooklyn, New York, to assist them in securing a foster home for this Pit Bull mix.
“They contacted us and mentioned, ‘We have this extremely friendly girl who’s very pregnant, and she needs out of the shelter urgently,’” Rachel, the founder of Twenty Paws Rescue, shared with PEOPLE.
Thanks to their extensive network, they quickly located the ideal place for Erica. Michael and Lora, from Coney Pet Grooming, also in Brooklyn, New York, chose to foster her until she could care for her young.
Although they believed the issue had been fully resolved, Michael soon sensed that something was amiss with Erica. She appeared anxious and downcast, and they were uncertain of the cause.
However, clarity came when Rachel, from Twenty Paws Rescue, received an email from the same shelter that had surrendered Erica.
“You know, she was surrendered along with her sister, and her sister won’t eat, drink, or walk. We have to carry her inside and outside. Would you consider taking her too? She’s so depressed in the shelter,” the staff wrote in the email regarding Erica’s sister Diamond.
It became evident that both Erica and Diamond were in distress because they couldn’t be without one another. Thankfully, Michael and Lora were kind-hearted, so they agreed to also welcome Diamond into their home.
Raising The Puppies Together
Only two days following this heartwarming reunion, on September 29, a heavily pregnant Erica went into labor. Throughout, her devoted sister, Diamond, remained by her side, allowing her to deliver 13 puppies. Regrettably, two were stillborn, but the remainder were perfectly healthy.
Initially, Erica was extremely protective of her offspring and prevented Diamond from coming near. However, she soon became fatigued from caring for them single-handedly, prompting her sister to step in without hesitation.
“When we observed that Erica was becoming exhausted and craved a break and Diamond was nursing, we kind of rotated them, and Diamond took over as Mama Bear, showering them with love, grooming them, and feeding them with remarkable patience. Following that, they began nurturing and grooming them together,” Rachel recounted.
Michael added that “Diamond was incredibly gentle, and she truly cherished the responsibility.” Because both were approaching this “task” with immense care, they successfully raised happy and healthy pups.
As soon as the pups matured sufficiently and were ready for adoption, all 11 of them secured their forever homes. Only Erica and Diamond remained, but certain conditions were set for their adoption.
Their boundless mutual affection determined the criteria for their adoption.
Never Separated Again
The two sisters faced considerable difficulty being apart for merely a few days, let alone enduring a lifetime without each other. Therefore, their caregivers determined that they could only be adopted together into a permanent home.
“It’s the only option,” Rachel stated. “Everything they do is together. They attend doggy daycare together and snuggle on a bed together. They may get up to play occasionally, but they quickly return to each other. They are always side by side.”
Rachel expressed her hope that soon, a kind-hearted family will recognize the beauty in these two girls and provide them with the happiest ending possible.
Michael concurred, noting: “They are incredibly loving, affectionate, and playful dogs. Moreover, they are altogether easy to care for; they require nothing more than food and love.”
Wherever they find themselves, it’s certain that Erica and Diamond will bring joy and unconditional love to their new home, and they will never be parted again.
Erica and Diamond are two bodies united as one soul.
