It’s heartbreaking to discover that older dogs are the least appealing age category for adoptions.

Typically, individuals prefer puppies or younger dogs – pets they can mold as per their desires. Rarely does someone choose to offer a senior dog a fresh opportunity.

Unbeknownst to many, adopting an older dog signifies adding the gold to their golden years. These dogs receive another chance and the possibility to enjoy a satisfying life, even if just for a brief period.

Henry, the champion older dog in this narrative, was nearing the rainbow bridge, not solely due to his ailments, but because he was relinquished to the shelter. His prior family no longer desired him and could not manage his health issues.

They performed the most unfathomable act against a family canine. However, fortunate for Henry, his rescuers swiftly appeared and provided him with the beautiful life he always merited.

When the founder of Marley’s Mutts, a non-profit rescue organization based in California, Zach Skow, discovered Henry’s situation, he was determined to take him in.

A passionate dog enthusiast and rescuer with numerous successful fostering experiences, Zach reached out and welcomed Henry into his abode. When nobody else wished to adopt him, Zach stepped in and placed Henry’s paw in his hand.

At around 16 years of age, Henry had endured a lot. As previously mentioned, his prior owners relinquished him to the shelter due to his advanced age and illness. Henry was diagnosed with cancerous masses throughout his body, and, in addition, he was deaf and partially sighted.

When Zach first encountered Henry, he assumed the unfortunate old fellow had only a few weeks, if not mere days, remaining. However, thankfully, Henry disproved everyone’s doubts.

He underwent surgery to eliminate the cancerous cells and began to feel significantly better. With Zach’s nurturing, Henry flourished. He transformed into a cheerful pup, with no other markings of his seniority aside from his gray fur.

Henry was at last relishing life as he was meant to. His senior or golden years, as I prefer to refer to them, can be a particularly challenging stage for any dog. These canines deserve all the additional love, care, and time we can bestow upon them.

Because, one day… we might awaken to find that their time has arrived.

Zach wasn’t the sole benevolent individual wishing to aid Henry. He understood the necessity of securing him a caring forever home – a family that would dedicate their full time to Henry’s concluding days.

Assistance materialized through Caro Aguilar’s family. They welcomed Henry and enveloped him with affection, enhancing his final days significantly.

Henry was flourishing. His medical evaluations returned with no anomalies. He was just like any other senior dog.

Days transformed into weeks, weeks into months, and months into a year. For more than a year, Henry became part of the Aguilar household. He brought joy and brightness, along with a love that surpassed what anyone believed was conceivable.

Regrettably, Henry journeyed across the rainbow bridge on June 1st, 2022, leaving an everlasting emptiness that no one will ever fill. He broke his family’s hearts, even though they understood he could not withstand the passage of time.
