Canine mistreatment is not an entirely new issue, yet it consistently and continually breaks our hearts.
Maya is not merely a representation of mistreatment. She embodies all the underdogs who have faced neglect, abandonment, or abuse throughout their existence. She stands as a beacon of perseverance and a poignant reminder of what thoughtless humans can inflict.
Fortunately, Maya’s tragic narrative didn’t conclude there, in a desolate area. On the contrary – it was merely the beginning!
Maya’s Background
On the day of her abandonment, a woman named April spotted Maya. She witnessed the owner tying Maya to a fence on an empty street and then departing – permanently. Realizing he wouldn’t return, April reached out to Underdog Heroes, in California.
“Sweet girl Maya was overbred, mistreated, disregarded, and thrown away like refuse, chained up in extreme heat without food or water in the middle of nowhere,” UH shared on Facebook.
April couldn’t fathom why anyone would inflict such cruelty on an innocent creature.
“She was just gazing at me with those incredibly sorrowful eyes. I couldn’t comprehend why the owner had abandoned her there,” April conveyed to The Dodo.
She chose to remain with Maya for as long as needed until the compassionate volunteers from this California rescue arrived to assist.
Initially, Maya was terribly frightened and anxious. Her body was plagued with scabies and fleas, and she was still nursing, which made her situation even more heartbreaking. She underwent numerous surgeries and had her own trainer who instructed her in basic etiquette.
Eventually, when she was prepared – Maya moved to her new foster residence.
“She spent some time training with our coach, and after several months, we finally managed to secure her the most wonderful foster family who soon decided they couldn’t part with her, and she now has a forever home,” the rescue stated.
Claire and Tom couldn’t be more pleased to welcome this delightful girl into their lives.
Although she was still rather timid and uncertain due to her previous experiences, Maya adapted to her new setting remarkably!
