A rescue organization for dogs and cats based in Texas, named Three Little Pitties Rescue, was mentioned in a Facebook update concerning a dog that had been left behind under a highway overpass.
Owing to a communication barrier and inaccurate translation of the location, the dog’s precise location was undetermined.
Regardless, Lindsey, a representative of the rescue, ventured out hoping to locate the distressed dog.
Ultimately, she successfully discovered the animal and enlisted the aid of three other incredible rescuers to assist in rescuing this immensely frightened and hurt dog.
The Rescue Operation
Lindsey immediately sensed that something was severely amiss with the dog.
“From my first perspective of observing her, it appeared as though her foot had been entirely severed,” she remarked.
They had no notion of how long her leg had been in that state or when she was abandoned there, but speculated that she might have sustained injuries during her dumping or when being thrown from a vehicle.
In any case, this unfortunate creature had been horrendously abused and had endured significant suffering.
Just by gazing into her eyes, it was evident she was experiencing a profound level of agony. She was exhausted, too… utterly fatigued from everything.
Lindsey had a multitude of inquiries swirling in her mind, such as “For how long was she beneath that bridge?” and “What was the timeframe that led to her reaching this state?”, but above all, it was crucial to assist her as quickly as possible.
The rescuers took approximately 30 minutes to make her comfortable and get her into their vehicle. She was barely able to move on her own due to the intense pain she was enduring.
She was also profoundly terrified and whimpering due to her pain, which shattered their hearts. Despite everything, she managed to wag her tail once she felt sufficiently at ease around her rescuers.
Since it was quite late at night, they hurried to take her to the emergency veterinarian.
Efforts to Save Her
As they rushed the sweet Pittie, later dubbed Lucie Caboose, to the emergency clinic in Galveston, TX, her condition appeared to deteriorate further, and she was in excruciating pain.
“I heard her cry, and it was profoundly sorrowful and lamentable,” Lindsey expressed.
Lucie was diagnosed with Pyometra – a critical, life-threatening uterine infection stemming from not being spayed.
In addition to her uterus, she was contending with severe infections throughout her small body… heart, liver, kidneys, and foot, alongside advanced heartworm. She was placed on potent antibiotics to combat all of those issues.
The veterinarians were unable to perform any surgeries as her heart was extremely weak. On some days, she would show signs of improvement, only for her condition to decline again the following day.
Lucie was valiantly fighting for her life, yet ultimately, it became too overwhelming for her.
Regrettably, after over $6,000 spent and several weeks at the animal hospital, the infection spread to her bones and bloodstream.
“She passed away peacefully surrounded by so much affection that I hope she felt. She deserved more. 💔 She deserved a family who cherished her, snuggled her, and attended to her needs,” Three Little Pitties Rescue shared in their Facebook update.
They exhausted every option available to save her, but it simply wasn’t feasible.
And, even though her suffering was unbearable, she was at least surrounded by individuals who loved her dearly, and I truly hope that she was aware of that.
“Lucie, we deeply regret this occurrence. We regret that your owners let you down. We apologize for our inability to save you. We tried so earnestly. We adored you, and you were valuable. Your life had significance.”
The state of Texas is regrettably facing an overwhelming number of abandoned animals, leading to perpetual overcrowding in shelters.
Let Lucie and her narrative serve as a reminder and a lesson to all that no dog should ever be subjected to such treatment. No animal should endure that level of suffering.
Lucie, we wish you eternal peace and happiness, free from pain.
