It is well-known that animal shelters across the United States are not in ideal condition.
Per Forbes, roughly 6.3 million animals enter shelters in the US each year. Regrettably, merely 4.1 million find homes. This results in the remainder spending their days confined to kennels, pondering the same question they had upon arrival – why is nobody fond of them?
A small family left by the roadside questioned why their owner heartlessly deserted them there without any concern for their welfare.
Everything Will Be Just Fine
Fortunately, they were ultimately rescued by the wonderful team at Three Little Pitties Rescue in Texas.
“It was devastating. They were squeezed into a small, dirty kennel left on a sidewalk. Persephone was tethered to the kennel with a leash, unable to care for her pups,” Melissa Fears, the founder of the Texas-based rescue, shared in an interview.
What’s even more tragic is that the puppies languished in this situation for several days. Passersby ignored them repeatedly, and not a soul stopped to assist. While one individual did eventually open their cage, it was only after a Good Samaritan reached out to the shelter that they received assistance.
No one understood why they were abandoned in such a manner, but Fears had her theories.
“Our best hypothesis is that Persephone’s owner neglected to spay her, and when she gave birth, it became too overwhelming for them to handle. Sadly, this is quite common – pregnant or nursing dogs are often forsaken on the streets here. Individuals feel inundated, and it’s the dogs who end up suffering,” she mentioned.
The moment the shelter staff took them under their wing, they reached out to Alexis, alerting her about the circumstances and inquiring whether she could foster them.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she joyfully accepted and initiated a fresh chapter for them.
At The Fosters
Given the state they were rescued from, it was no shock that the pups were rather ill, with one of them even in dire straits.
“The most ailing puppy couldn’t even rise; her body temperature was merely around 90°F, while the normal range is 101-102°F, and her gums, ears, and belly were nearly white. We genuinely weren’t sure if she’d make it through that first night. She was so delicate that even soft touches caused her to whimper,” Fears recounted.
Fortunately, one pup was in better health than the others. This offered reassurance to the rescuers as they hoped her siblings would also improve.
After a challenging recovery process, each and every pup made a remarkable comeback. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief upon realizing that this family was destined for a joyful and healthy future.
Now, only the challenge of finding a caring forever home for these delightful pups remains.
“The puppies would make an ideal match for an energetic family or someone who can match their spirited enthusiasm. They will need understanding, affection, and a little guidance to grow into the wonderful dogs they are capable of becoming,” Fears said.
Regarding their mother, Fears believes that she would thrive in a household with another male dog. She is incredibly well-mannered and the most loyal companion of them all.
