Locating a home for a rescue dog is not a straightforward endeavor. Many individuals tend to seek out younger puppies and completely overlook elder canines.

This can create significant difficulties for the team. They will continually attempt to find a household for the older dogs, yet they are not always triumphant.

In situations like this, reaching out as extensively as possible and sharing a dog’s narrative on social platforms may be their last chance for a new opportunity.

Smokey’s circumstance was not vastly different. He was taken to the Pennsylvania SPCA, and everyone was very optimistic that he would be placed with a new family shortly.

At first sight, he appeared very gentle and enjoyed mingling with just about everyone. Though he was undernourished upon arrival, that soon improved.

With the right nutrition and a bit of time, Smokey blossomed into a very attractive dog in no time at all. Once he fully recuperated, the search for a new family began.

This marked the beginning of his initial challenges. SPCA conveyed in a post on Facebook: “Smokey has spent nearly four years seeking a home. Throughout his 40 months of waiting, only a handful of individuals have inquired about him.

Concerns began to arise regarding his situation. Nothing the team tried seemed effective. The shelter staff were at their wits’ end to find a family for him, but it bore no fruit.

Everyone involved understood it wasn’t his fault. He was incredibly affectionate and would bring joy to someone if given the chance.

A volunteer shared with The Dodo: “His unwavering loyalty is something I cherish. He looks at me with such affection and often checks in on me by glancing back during our walks. He’s also stunning, with his deep black fur accented by rich brown highlights.

Discussing his preferred pastimes, the volunteer highlighted that Smokey really enjoys strolls in tranquil areas and discovering his environment. He also revels in playing tug and fetch.

The shelter team is working hard to locate a home where he would thrive. He can adapt to both rural and urban settings but would likely prefer a more peaceful household.

Although he enjoys the company of other dogs, it may be best for him to be the sole dog in the household.

While we cannot predict what the future holds for Smokey, the Pennsylvania SPCA remains dedicated to his wellbeing and hopes that he will experience a joyful life with a loving companion.

At the conclusion of the post, they expressed: “Smokey has so much affection to share – and it is genuine. After such a lengthy wait, it is time for a forever family to provide him with the same love.
