Rescuing and bringing joy back to an abandoned animal is indeed one of the most exquisite experiences for those who possess a generous spirit.
For a dog, there is nothing more significant than when you mend the harm done to its heart by another person.
Regrettably, despite the best efforts of many, some dogs are so traumatized that they lack the desire to venture into daylight.
In such circumstances, only those filled with immense love and determination will prevail.
A Surprise Within A Sewer Drain
The Los Angeles region is recognized for several organizations and shelters that provide assistance to dogs and other animals that have been mistreated or deserted.
Nevertheless, numerous cases persist of those unfortunate pups left alone, roaming the streets and in places like deserted homes, burrows, and neighborhoods.
This perfectly characterized one puppy, a 6-month-old retriever mix, who concealed herself unnoticed beneath a residential area for weeks before anyone became aware of her.
She discovered her refuge within a sewer drain. Although she often emerged cautiously, bystanders either failed to see her or simply walked past her since she was in the sewer.
This continued until one day, a Good Samaritan spotted her. She promptly snapped a photo and shared it on Facebook. Subsequently, something remarkable transpired. Individuals began gathering at that location to see the dog.
Sadly, this only exacerbated the dog’s situation as she grew even more petrified. Whenever someone approached her, she would retreat back into the hole, which was situated at least 18 feet deep.
A situation like this undoubtedly necessitated the involvement of skilled and experienced individuals. Hence, Suzette Hall, the founder of Logan’s Legacy, along with her team, arrived at the scene of the ordeal.
The rescue operation was finally set to commence.
Surprisingly Challenging Rescue
Burrowed deep within the sewer drain, which Hall referred to as the “hole,” the puppy eluded her rescuers. She was far beyond their grasp, and even using extended sticks and poles, they failed to entice her out.
Hall recognized that the crowd gathered was complicating matters further. As a result, she courteously asked them to disperse so they could resolve this situation more efficiently. Once they cleared out, she devised a strategy.
“We understood that we needed to cover her hole,” Hall explained. “That was the sole opportunity we had to retrieve her.”
They waited for a duration of two complete days and one entire night for Cora, as they later named her, to emerge from the hole.
When her hunger became unbearable, she cautiously peeked out of the sewer drain. At that instant, crew members Rosario and Rebecca immediately covered the hole.
As Cora could no longer retreat into the hole, she dashed beneath a car across the street. The team strategically used baby gates to block the area beneath the car, and then Hall deftly slipped a snare leash over her head.
“When they cheered, ‘Suzette, you got her,’ I genuinely could not suppress my tears,” Hall recounted. “We all stood there and wept.”
They all felt deep sympathy for the dog, recognizing that it had struggled to escape from the hole after two weeks. This was because the hole symbolized a safe haven for the dog… akin to a comfort zone.
Nevertheless, they had to make that sacrifice to assist her and offer her a chance at a new life.
The Commencement Of A New Life
Once they confirmed that Cora could no longer flee, they promptly transported her to a nearby hospital in Los Angeles, Camino Pet Hospital.
Shortly after her arrival, she received a clean health assessment and a much-needed bath. Following this, Cora was prepared for her temporary care.
Although Cora has yet to find her permanent home, this little girl will soon be introduced to her temporary setup.
Considering her sweet, adorable, and vibrant nature, we have no doubt that her happily ever after is on the horizon.
