For over three decades, Labrador Retrievers have been among the most cherished canine breeds among pet lovers in the United States.
Nevertheless, it appears that the landscape shifted in 2022. After 31 years at the pinnacle of the American Kennel Club’s popularity rankings, Labradors were overtaken by French Bulldogs.
This revelation came as a considerable shock, given that Frenchies are considerably smaller than Labs, demonstrating that smaller pooches are now preferred over larger ones in American homes.
The Ascent and Decline of America’s Beloved Dog
Labrador Retrievers have consistently topped the American Kennel Club charts since the 1980s, climbing from the fourteenth to the third position among the most favored dog breeds in the U.S.
It wasn’t long before they became America’s pets of choice. The AKC noted that Labs took the number one position in 1991 and maintained that status until late 2021. [1]
One reason for the popularity of these canines is their character and adaptability. As Judy Heim expressed to the AKC:
“They can be activated or deactivated on command. If I’m in the mood to hike, run, swim, play fetch, or hunt, they are eager to participate. Conversely, if I prefer to stay in, indulge in a tub of ice cream, enjoy the Super Bowl, or watch a film, they are just as happy to relax alongside me.”
Yet, this wasn’t sufficient for Labs to retain their lead for a 32nd consecutive year.
What Led to the Rise of Frenchies?
Usurping a canine breed that held the top position in American homes for thirty years was certainly no small feat, but Frenchies have succeeded with their expressive eyes and petite paws.
According to Patty Sosa, a representative for the French Bulldog Club of America, the success of Frenchies can be attributed to their minimal care requirements and their enjoyable demeanor. [2]
The fraction of registered French Bulldogs has surged dramatically from 2012 to 2021, experiencing an increase of over 1000%, as mentioned in an AKC article. However, this surge still wasn’t enough to secure the top position, resulting in Frenchies being the second most popular breed in the USA in 2021.
Nevertheless, just a year later, the situation changed markedly, and Frenchies finally ascended to the pinnacle.
Considering that only a decade ago, these pooches weren’t even among the top 10 favored dog breeds, this achievement is significant.
Who Is Behind Frenchies’ Success?
Frenchies could easily be dubbed the “Hollywood Canines” due to their immense popularity among celebrities, which may play a role in them being the top dog breed in the U.S.
Stars like Lady Gaga, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Megan Thee Stallion, 2 Chainz, Reese Witherspoon, and Martha Stewart proudly own French Bulldogs and showcase them on their social media and at public appearances.
Thus, it’s hardly surprising that the public has become enamored with this breed, desiring to own one similar to their favorite star.
However, this type of fame can have its downsides.
Regrettably, incidents of dog theft have surged by nearly 40% over the last two years, and Frenchies appear to be the most sought-after by thieves, as highlighted in the Good Morning America show.
This is why dog guardians are strongly recommended to avoid leaving their pets unattended, not just in public spaces, but even within their backyards.
