It was yet another chilly day in Missouri. Nate Ohlman, a postal worker at the U.S. Postal Service, was completing his tasks, oblivious to the fact that he would soon encounter a furry friend who would alter his life.
While he was making his deliveries, suddenly, he stumbled upon an elderly dog lying on the roadside. The canine was covered in wounds and was fighting to stay warm.
Upon seeing him, Ohlman was heartbroken and knew he needed to provide assistance.
Hurriedly Taking Him To The Clinic
Ohlman began to move toward him cautiously as he didn’t want to frighten him away. As he got closer, he noticed that the dog had difficulty seeing and hearing him.
“I shifted around a bit and made some sounds until he was able to see me, and as soon as he did, he stood up and rushed toward my mail truck. He was frostbitten, malnourished, and alone,” Ohlman recounted.
The pup, subsequently called Sloan, sensed that he could trust Ohlman and accepted his aid immediately. Once Sloan was in his vehicle, Ohlman thoroughly examined him. He was extremely underweight and uncared for.
Ohlman was convinced that Sloan had been abandoned by his previous owners. The idea that someone could be so callous and betray this affectionate dog puzzled him.
He took him to the animal clinic immediately, hoping he had arrived in time to save his new friend and that he would pull through. He provided his contact information to the clinic staff and requested updates on Sloan’s health.
Ohlman returned to his duties, but he couldn’t shake thoughts of Sloan and pondered how he was faring. The dog’s plight deeply affected him, knowing that he lacked anyone to provide him with affection. Ohlman made the decision to put an early-bird adoption hold on him.
“I reflected on how and why someone could perform such a heinous act against such a defenseless creature. It devastated me to imagine he had no one to care for him. I had to adopt him — it was a necessity. I may not believe in many things, but I do believe I was destined to find him,” Ohlman expressed.
The Pooch Receives Exceptional Care
KC Pet Project, based in Kansas City, Missouri, took the gentle pup under their wing and Sloan transitioned to the shelter. The staff at the shelter were devastated upon witnessing the awful condition the dog was in. He was so undernourished and frail that he could hardly stand on his feet.
“He had the lowest body score condition that our veterinarians could assign,” Tori Fugate, the chief communications officer at KC Pet Project, disclosed to The Dodo.
Sloan’s caregivers administered the required medications. Initially, they were uncertain whether Sloan would survive, but once he received exceptional care, the dog’s condition began to improve.
Once he regained his vigor, he transitioned to a foster home. His foster family showered him with affection, and he continued to flourish.
Sloan blossomed into the happiest and most charming pup. He relished the cuddles and attention that his foster family lavished upon him.
Rushing into His Dad’s Embrace
Once Sloan had fully recuperated, he was prepared to find his forever home. His friends at the shelter contacted the pup’s rescuer, who was eagerly anticipating their reunion.
When Ohlman discovered that he could finally adopt Sloan, he was ecstatic. Sloan’s friends at the shelter were thrilled to witness their heartwarming reunion. The adorable pup recognized the face of his savior, and he was filled with joy to see him again.
He dashed into his arms and showered him with affection, eager to express his gratitude for rescuing him.
Sloan embraced his life with joy. At last, he had a father who cherished him unconditionally. He felt secure and treasured.
Regrettably, Ohlman announced on his Facebook that the beloved Sloan had passed on to doggy heaven. He was blissful with his father, who showered him with love. Ohlman will forever hold close the cherished memories he created with his adored doggo.
