Every dog deserves the opportunity to spend their life surrounded by a family that will cherish them unconditionally. Nonetheless, many do not experience this privilege and find themselves confronting a tragic fate.
Each year, roughly 390,000 dogs are put to sleep, based on ASPCA data. Among this number, canines with disabilities face the highest risk, as many owners either cannot afford the necessary care or simply choose not to handle it.
Kora, a Great Pyrenees from North Carolina, was on the verge of confronting the same fate.
This adorable girl was struck by a vehicle, and her owners weren’t able to afford her care, leading them to opt for euthanasia… until one of the veterinarians stepped in!
From Struck By A Vehicle To A Forever Residence
Kora’s initial family intended to use her as a working farm dog, but everything shifted when she was hit by a vehicle.
At that moment, they were unaware of both the severity of her injuries and the expenses for her treatment, so they made the hardest choice of their lives – arranging for euthanasia at the veterinary clinic.
“They realized that not only would it be financially burdensome to keep her, but they needed a dog that could help on their farm,” states Aly.
Despite it being her day off, Aly, one of the veterinarians at North Carolina Vet Clinic, hurried over to meet the dog about to be euthanized, and she fell in love at first sight.
Although she was on the brink of an awful fate, Kora was still wagging her tail and radiating joy, which prompted Aly to want to adopt her immediately!
When she brought the idea to Kora’s owners, they were more than willing to give her up, as they had never intended to euthanize her but felt they had no option left.
From that moment forward, Aly committed herself to enhancing Kora’s condition – defying all odds!
Evolving Into The Most Gentle Family Companion
Kora underwent significant surgery. She was referred to orthopedic specialists who did everything they could to salvage her leg. Nonetheless, this sweet girl had to stay at the hospital for a week, so Aly was determined not to rush the process.
Kora was consistently monitored by Aly’s fellow veterinarians and was required to take numerous medications, but it was all worth it! Finally, this sweet girl was discharged from the hospital, and for the very first time ever – she stepped foot in her new home!
This was Kora’s initial experience of a house—she had lived outdoors her entire life.
“She was strictly an outdoor dog. They informed us she had never been inside before. We had no clue what to anticipate, but it was clear she was fitting in wonderfully. She loves our cats and is very gentle with them,” comments Aly.
Just like that – Kora acquired a whole family of both canine and feline companions, and she absolutely loved it! Although she had never had the opportunity to live indoors before, she adapted remarkably and blossomed into the sweetest girl imaginable!
Despite her exuberant nature, she remains gentle around her smaller friends, making her a beloved companion to everyone!
Her feline siblings enjoy snuggling against her soft fur, while the other dogs relish the playful times with Kora in the backyard!
She reciprocates everyone’s affection, and at times – she’s the one who brings joy and laughter to all! For example, she never received many treats previously; now, she produces the most comical noise every time her mom gives her one!
“Initially, she didn’t have many treats because she was on numerous medications… What she does is called the flehmen response. She gets that food excitement and spreads it across her palate,” she explains.
She truly was the missing element this whole time, as with Kora in the household – everyone is significantly happier!
Once a dog facing unnecessary euthanasia, Kora is now the most joyful canine in the world!
