Even though we can hear crackling noises from the fireplace when the flames are ablaze, it is quite rare for there to be any sound emitted when there is no fire present.

Nevertheless, one couple of homeowners experienced just that – an unusual sound emanating from the fireplace during a time when no fire was lit. Although they were initially taken aback, they chose not to freak out, but cautiously approached the area and peered inside.

Upon examining the interior, they were met with an unexpected guest.

Just A Baby

According to the Facebook post authored by WIRES Wildlife Rescue, the couple was astonished when they discovered a lizard in the upper section.

To exacerbate the situation, it turned out to be a juvenile goanna or lace monitor. As noted by A-Z Animals, these animals can grow to be up to six feet long, which could present a significant issue.

Fortunately, this goanna did not appear to be anywhere near that size. Still, the couple opted to contact a professional for an evaluation and to handle the situation.

Upon receiving a call from the homeowners, one of their most dedicated volunteers, Inga, arrived at the scene rapidly, prepared for action.

As she approached the fireplace, Inga courageously reached inside and seized the wild creature. Everyone exhaled with relief upon realizing that it was indeed a baby.

“I was careful at first, as it might have been a trapped snake,” the WIRES volunteer rescuer shared with The Dodo. “But once I understood it was a young goanna, I felt it was secure to put my hand in to capture it. I felt compassion for the little one, as it would have been struggling to escape and likely hungry and dehydrated.”

As lace monitors are excellent climbers, it is likely that this one ascended the residence but curiosity led him down the chimney where he became trapped in the upper part of the wall.

Fortunately, due to this wonderful woman, he was ultimately safe.

Back Where He Belongs

To Inga’s satisfaction, the lizard was in perfect health, eliminating the necessity for extensive rehabilitation.

She swiftly placed him into a carrier and transported him to the WIRES facility. After several days of observation and additional hydration, this juvenile lizard was prepared for a fresh start.

They set him free and he returned to where he rightly belonged – his natural environment. He was at last liberated to grow and flourish, just as every creature deserves.
