An aged gentleman was on one of his routine strolls through Massapequa Park, in New York, when he stumbled upon something quite extraordinary – or, to be more specific, he heard something distinctly unusual.
The sound resembled that of a creature, akin to a dinosaur.
Curious, the elderly man approached to investigate only to discover a sizable creature in a troubled condition, obviously hurt and pleading for assistance.
The Cries Of Pain
Amid a tangled mass of foliage and thorns, there lay a great blue heron – a sizable wading bird prevalent in North and Central America.
The unfortunate creature was clearly injured and required assistance.
Devastated to witness it in such a state, the man made the choice to reach out to the local wildlife rehabilitator, Karenlynn Stracher.
She is a retired NYC Paramedic and a licensed animal rehabilitator who cares for ill and injured wildlife across Nassau County.
Upon receiving the notification about a distressed creature, Stracher promptly sprang into action. Upon her arrival, she, too, recognized the bird’s distinctive calls.
“They sound like dinosaurs,” she remarked in her video uploaded to her TikTok account.
The bird’s wings were ensnared in the foliage and thorns, causing him pain. He was scared, and despite being gravely injured, he still attempted to escape from her.
“He was quite terrified but began to settle down a bit as I freed him,” Karenlynn Stracher conveyed to The Dodo.
It’s completely normal for a wild creature to be frightened, although she had wished there were a method to somehow convey that she was there to assist.
After liberating the creature, Stracher was able to see just how magnificent he was. She carefully cradled him in her arms and transported him to the carrier.
Receiving Assistance
The majority of blue herons migrate to warmer regions during the winter, but there are a few that choose to stay in northern territories.
Remaining in the north is usually a hazardous choice, yet if they have access to open water and sustenance, it can work out well. Nonetheless, as demonstrated, not all blue herons that opt to remain survive the winter.
This bird was quite fortunate as he was discovered and transported to a place where he could receive all the essential care.
He had likely been struck by a vehicle and was incapacitated to fly. Regrettably, the poor bird sustained injuries to both his beak and leg.
Stracher took him to her associates at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown, New York, for further evaluation and ongoing treatment.

The bird is anticipated to make a complete recovery and be freed back into the wild, where he rightfully belongs.
If it were not for a compassionate man and his sharp senses, the bird likely would not have made it.
