When a gentleman spotted something unusual bobbing in the rubble of a flooded river in San Diego, he realized it was an animal in distress.
He promptly contacted the San Diego Humane Society, which, due to the animal’s location being too distant, couldn’t reach it by land.
However, upon noticing that the creature had its head trapped in a plastic container, they understood that time was of the essence, hence they requested additional support.
Rescue Operation
Since the sole method to reach the animal was via boat, the rescue team sought assistance from the lifeguards.
Two lifeguards quickly answered the call and soon found themselves on the river, paddling towards the distressed animal.
Despite adverse weather conditions complicating the rescue, the two committed individuals succeeded in reaching it.
While making their way back to safety, the lifeguards successfully retrieved the animal, which they believed to be a dog, and brought it ashore into the capable hands of the animal rescuers.
The canine was wrapped in a blanket and placed in a truck so that it could be transported to the nearest San Diego Wildlife Center for the removal of the plastic container.
Finally Secured
Upon arrival at the Wildlife Center, the personnel immediately proceeded to extract the container from the creature’s head. Nonetheless, when they finally observed the animal’s face, they came to a startling conclusion.
This was not a dog, in fact!
The animal that was rescued was actually a wild coyote.
However, the specific type of animal didn’t change the fact; the team was still delighted to assist because he was experiencing mild hypothermia, along with numerous cactus spines embedded in his fur and various injuries that required attention.
After a day at the Wildlife Center, the coyote was relocated to another facility that specializes in rehabilitating apex predators.
The staff is confident that this magnificent coyote will heal swiftly and subsequently be returned to its natural habitat where it truly belongs.

It is crucial to remember that when encountering wild coyotes, you must not approach them!
Since coyotes, along with raccoons, skunks, bats, and foxes, are vulnerable to various strains of the rabies virus, getting too close poses a risk of bites and potential rabies exposure.
