The tale of Cougar may be quite heartbreaking, yet with the help of some remarkable individuals, his narrative could have a joyful conclusion after all.
However, like any narrative, I have to begin from the very start.
This affectionate German Shepherd named Cougar previously had a residence where he cohabited with his canine companion.
Due to specific situations, they were both relocated to new homes, but it seems the new situation was either incapable or unwilling to care for them, resulting in the dogs ending up on the streets.
They were likely very bewildered and frightened as they tried to navigate the daunting streets, which ultimately resulted in the tragic event of both being hit by vehicles.
Sadly, Cougar’s friend did not make it, but Cougar survived, although he sustained severe injuries.
Battling For His Life
As reported by a shelter in OC, California, Animal Control discovered Cougar alongside the road with a severely fractured front leg and a ruptured ligament in his hind leg.
Since he was chipped, the shelter urgently attempted to reach his owner, but he did not respond to their calls.
The local shelter lacked the veterinary staff and resources to address his injuries, so they contacted Coastal German Shepherd Rescue, situated in Orange County, California.
“The shelter could not care for him any longer, as they were unable to provide essential medical assistance.
We agreed to attempt to help, knowing that we needed to arrange for a foster and the funds for orthopedic surgery. Thankfully, one of our outstanding volunteers offered to foster him, and we began making arrangements to rescue him from the shelter,” Coastal German Shepherd Rescue OC shared in their Facebook post.
Following a swift consultation with their trusted orthopedic specialist, it became clear that Cougar required immediate surgery.
There was insufficient time to organize a fundraiser as his life was on the line. The unfortunate dog had endured too much torment.
The veterinarian noted that he had been wandering around injured on the roadside for a month!
The surgery was conducted the very next day, and fortunately, it was successful.
“Both of his injuries were fixed, and he has been an exemplary patient! He is nothing short of an extraordinary dog, exceedingly affectionate even though he has faced more than any dog should have to face,” the rescue organization conveyed.
Cougar has approximately two months of recuperation ahead of him, while the shelter sought means to finance the expensive surgery.
Journey To Recovery
The shelter’s commitment to rehabilitate Cougar and transform his narrative forever was successful, as they managed to amass the required funds through contributions from incredibly generous supporters from California and beyond.
Tiffany Norton, the co-founder of the shelter, informed Newsweek: “Cougar is incredible and the most affectionate boy with a zest for life. He is the quintessential loyal, loving, and intelligent German Shepherd, so he would thrive in a home that desires a dog to be an active part of their family.”
He is a joyful, sociable, and toy-obsessed pup whose existence is finally looking up.
Although he has a lengthy journey ahead, there is certainly hope on the horizon.
In spite of the discomfort and trials he has faced, this two-year-old German Shepherd has not lost his spirit or his playful nature.
This update video from the shelter displays Cougar still wearing a cast on his leg while clutching a plush toy in his mouth.
He is quite a fortunate puppy who adores his comfort toys!
Once he is fit, Cougar will require a loving home – a residence that would never abandon him on the streets.
He still has an abundance of affection to share!
If possible, please consider supporting Coastal German Shepherd Rescue for all they have accomplished for Cougar and numerous other dogs.
