It is often said that a community is essential for keeping a pet secure – and typically, they are correct!

For the O’ahu family, it was merely an ordinary Wednesday stroll with their pet dog, a youthful Pit Bull named Kila. Everything appeared to be just fine until the eager Pittie spotted something intriguing moving in the distance.

Upon recognizing it was a chicken, Kila initiated a chasing escapade, tearing the leash from her owner’s grasp. What the family was oblivious to at that moment was that Kila’s little adventure would soon evolve into a prolonged rescue operation!

During the pursuit, Kila dashed for several yards and entered an open storm drain in Waianae, Hawaii. What had begun as a leisurely evening promenade transformed into a nightmare for her family.

“Neither of them anticipated that a stressful rescue would take place just four hours later,” Hawaiian Humane Society shared on their social media.

The owners attempted to entice her out, but she was already so far into the culvert that she didn’t realize it was becoming more constricted.

“Kila pursued the chicken for several yards, oblivious to the fact that the culvert was narrowing the further she advanced. That’s when she became trapped,” HHS noted.

Once her family recognized that their beloved dog was ensnared, they promptly dialed 911.

The collaborative teams of Hawaiian Humane Society’s Field Services and Honolulu Fire Department responded within moments and initiated what ended up being a four-hour-long rescue.

The rescue team initially aimed to coax Kila out, but they quickly revised their entire strategy. The firefighters recognized that the dog could not navigate the drain on her own, which led to their decision to begin excavating.

The objective was to dig down to the pipe and then cut it so Kila could exit safely. It required several hours of consistent digging and observation before they finally reached the dog, and in the end, they triumphed!

The entire operation was documented by HHS and it quickly gained popularity.

“Mahalo to the amazing team at Honolulu Fire Department Waiʻanae Fire Station 26 for their relentless efforts to save Kila,” the HHS team expressed.

Kila’s rescue captured attention nationwide, touching the hearts of countless individuals who were thrilled to witness this Pittie back on solid ground.

“A huge Mahalo to those with such big hearts! Your care and dedication to saving lives of all types are much appreciated,” remarked one person.

“Thank you for rescuing Kila! We are thankful for your tireless work and commitment to all that you save,” another commented.

After experiencing a rather distressing ordeal, Kila was safely reunited with her family unharmed, all thanks to her brave rescuers.

She truly behaved as if nothing traumatic had occurred, and instantly began wagging her tail, delighted to be reunited with her owners.

Kila’s rescue serves as yet another testament that compassion remains vibrant within our communities. Thanks to her extraordinary neighborhood, this Pittie can embark on many more journeys with her family… preferably this time, on a leash!
