It was February, many years ago, and the winter day was freezing, one of those moments when no one wishes to be outdoors. However, Victoria Bensch, the three-year-old child in this narrative, had other ideas. No one could fathom what was occurring in her tiny mind on the day she strayed from her residence in Cordes Lake, Arizona.
Winter days are brief. The sun rarely appears, and when it does, it doesn’t stick around for long. Daylight was on the verge of vanishing. The little girl had already disappeared into a shadowy woodland. The 30° F chilly temperatures did not signal any positive outcomes.
Nevertheless, Victoria had company. Her faithful companion, a dog named Blue, was with her throughout the ordeal. As a Queensland Heeler, Blue was a devoted pup, always by his young friend’s side. But Blue was also clever, intelligent enough to realize he needed to stay with the girl.
Blue kept the girl awake, vigilant, and cozy throughout the night. He cuddled beside her in a dry creek bed, acting as her guardian angel.
The night proved challenging for Victoria’s family and friends. Aware that the girl might have wandered anywhere, a search party was formed. Even a police helicopter was deployed, searching desperately for her.
After fifteen exhausting and arduous hours, the search concluded. Victoria was located. Matthew Uhl spotted both the girl and her dog. Blue remained on alert as Eric Tarr, a medic, approached Victoria. Yet, when the dog observed his girl beam with joy, he understood that everything would be just fine. Assistance had arrived.
Blue was leaping for happiness. The dog’s relief was evident across his face. Their small adventure that could have ended in tragedy was finally concluded. Successfully. All that the dog could do next was follow his little buddy to the helicopter.
Both Victoria and Blue emerged unscathed and healthy, despite the circumstances. Victoria was airlifted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital for care as she had experienced minor frostbite. Had it not been for Blue keeping her warm, only God knows what might have ensued.
Applause to everyone who participated in the hunt for Victoria. Yet, the genuine hero in this tale is Blue. Thanks to him and his fluffy fur, Victoria remained safe and warm. He truly is the best companion one could ever have.
