Yet, despite all efforts to locate a lost dog, sometimes it simply doesn’t occur. As devastating as it may be, some dogs may never find their way back home.
This is precisely why the narrative of a small dog named Maya feels as though it was extracted from a film… a genuine miracle.
A Touching Reunion After 8 Years
A tiny Chihuahua named Maya vanished without any indication. According to Silvia Fondacaro, Maya’s guardian, she and her spouse had gone to the beach that day.
During this time, Maya was left with Silvia’s mother, who briefly stepped out to the store to purchase an item. Upon her return, she realized that Maya was missing. In a state of panic, she quickly informed Silvia.
The moment Silvia and her spouse came back home, they commenced the search for Maya everywhere.
They scoured every location and even reported Maya as lost. However, they were met with no success. “I sought for her everywhere, for months and months… I rang all the houses in the region, and I even posted missing dog flyers throughout the city,” stated Silvia, in an interview for Corriere.it.
She came to the conclusion that Maya had been taken, and her despair grew.
As time passed, Silvia ultimately lost all hope of ever reuniting with her cherished companion.
Then, an astonishing event occurred.
Precisely eight years later, Silvia received a phone call from an animal protection organization.
After 8 years of silence and relentless searching, Maya was miraculously located.
Thanks to the caregivers working for the organization, a microchip that Maya possessed, and a woman who reported spotting a dog roaming the streets, the canine that had been absent for 8 years was finally returned home.
“It was surreal. Initially, I thought it was a prank. I was almost fainting from all the feelings. I couldn’t help but cry,” shared Silvia, reflecting on how she still feels a shiver when recalling the event.
Despite Maya having a microchip, it was not easy for the caretakers to identify Silvia as the rightful owner. The microchip’s number that was registered years prior was no longer valid.
They had to undertake a bit of investigation to track Silvia down, but fortunately, they successfully located her and reached out regarding her missing dog.
This is why continual reminders are given to all guardians about the importance of reporting any alterations concerning the safety of their pets, as well as updating personal data regarding their address and phone number, so that all guardians can be informed rapidly by appropriate authorities.

Maya returned home eight years older, with a few gray hairs on her face and looking different from what they remembered, yet she was still their little, cherished Maya.
“Now that she’s back, she follows me everywhere… even into the bathroom. She snatches my shoes and naps on them.”
While Maya was discovered in seemingly good health, she required surgery for a hernia. Silvia believes this resulted from poor sterilization and numerous litters.
In her story for Mediaset Infinity, she expressed her belief that Maya had been exploited extensively for profit and subsequently abandoned.
Fortunately, Maya is now exactly where she belongs… at home.
She’s thriving and ecstatic, and enjoys playing with her brother, Lucky, a mix of Chihuahua and Pomeranian.
