A dog need not be mistreated or forsaken to experience feelings of betrayal by humans. Occasionally, simply being left tethered in the yard for an extended period can shatter his spirit.
This was precisely what transpired with one Husky in Oregon, visible only to the neighbors through the fence of his yard. One neighbor, who sporadically fed him, could no longer tolerate the sight and decided one day to take action to rescue him.
Since she found it challenging to communicate with the dog’s owners and wanted to avoid taking matters into her own hands, she sought assistance from an experienced rescuer.
The Joy Of Freedom
As soon as Lee Asher, the founder of The Asher House, a non-profit sanctuary in Salem, Oregon, received the call from this woman, he immediately headed to the location.
Upon his arrival, she guided him to the backyard where the Husky named Joey was kept. The instant they approached the yard’s entrance, Joey’s head appeared through the fence, and Lee could distinctly see the sorrow in this distressed Husky’s eyes.
As soon as they entered, the unfortunate dog began to leap around Lee, exhibiting a blend of hostility and playfulness, common characteristics in neglected pets. Even this seasoned rescuer and animal lover found it challenging to settle him down, but he eventually managed to do so.
Once he regained control over the situation, he caressed Joey and carefully fastened a collar around his neck. Immediately after that, he swung open the patio door and let Joey out first. The dog’s response was a genuine indication of the exhilaration of freedom.

Even though Joey was finally free from the backyard, the battle for his liberation was far from concluded. In fact, it took numerous weeks for Lee and his partner to persuade Joey’s owners that it would be in his best interest to relinquish him.
Fortunately, they eventually agreed, and Lee couldn’t suppress his enthusiasm, declaring: “We’re gonna bring him home, and I’m simply ecstatic about this news!”
Nevertheless, since Joey had spent extensive time apart from humans and other dogs, Lee recognized that it would require additional time for him to adjust socially. Hence, he preferred not to take him to his sanctuary immediately.
Instead, he transported him to Suite Dog Daze Boarding, a boarding center situated in Salem, Oregon, where he was welcomed by the skilled dog trainer, Lisa. To help him gradually familiarize himself with other dogs, Lee introduced several members of the pack as well.
Although Lee and Lisa were concerned that Joey would struggle to adapt, this remarkable Husky soon alleviated all their worries and uncertainties. He quickly befriended other dogs and was promptly ready to meet the rest of the pack.
This Husky was soon headed towards his ultimate destination – his new home.
Happier Than Ever
During the journey to the sanctuary, Lee observed that Joey had transformed into an entirely different dog. He relished the company of other canines, played joyfully with them, and wore a smile on his face consistently.
However, he truly flourished when he finally arrived at his new abode. Gone was the neglected dog with a sorrowful expression. Now, he radiated positivity, spreading joy to Lee and all his fellow dogs with whom he shared his home from that day forward.
Joey embraced every moment of his newfound existence, happier than ever, and his rescuer took pride in making this a reality for him. Ultimately, none of this could have occurred without the compassionate neighbor whose determination to aid this dog led to his emancipation.
