Upon receiving a call regarding a puppy heartlessly abandoned by an individual near a pub, the personnel at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) quickly assembled their equipment and set off for the location.
This was not their first encounter with a pup being left in a random spot, so they presumed it would just be another rehabilitation case.
However, upon discovering the small puppy, what they encountered utterly shattered their hearts.
Unique Puppy
Upon seeing the little puppy, Lauren Bailey, an inspector at the RSPCA, immediately recognized that there was something extraordinary about her.
The puppy, who would later be named Emmie, had a twisted spine and was incapable of straightening her front legs. As a result, walking was not something she found pleasurable, particularly over extended distances.
The team speculates that the five-month-old Chihuahua-Yorkie mix suffered these abnormalities due to poor breeding practices. It is highly probable that Emmie is a victim of a breeding craze aimed at creating “Teacup dogs” – diminutive canines weighing no more than 5 lbs.
Regrettably, those breeders neglect to acknowledge that producing such miniature dogs frequently leads to long-lasting health problems.
“Deformities may also result from inadequate nutrition and a poor start in life, where both the mother and the puppies do not receive essential care during the critical early weeks and months of the puppy’s life, causing poor growth,” stated Lisa Hens, a dog welfare specialist at the RSPCA, in a press release.
The RSPCA team was concerned about the difficulty of finding a suitable forever home for little Emmie that could cater to all her requirements. Fortunately, their concerns dissipated when one of the animal collection officers, Kate Wright, offered a helping hand to this sweetest girl.
Fresh Start
Since Kate had recently lost a puppy, she and her surviving dog struggled to cope. She recognized that they needed something or someone new to redirect their attention and energy, so when she learned that this adorable girl required a temporary home, she was eager to help.
Upon her arrival at her foster home, Emmie was resolute in overcoming every obstacle posed by her disability and restore joy to her new family.
“I can hardly believe how joyful and affectionate this little girl is, given how poorly she has been treated and let down by people. When she got here, she was so thin and really feeble. Nonetheless, she’s a little fighter with a delightful character. She’s truly made herself at home and adores Saff and my other new foster, Ruby,” Kate noted in a release.
Despite her difficulties walking, Emmie never hesitates to join her fosters and siblings on outings.
Since she occasionally struggles to keep pace, her devoted foster parents devised a brilliant solution. They purchased a special sling to carry her along when she becomes fatigued.
“This way, she can still enjoy the outdoors and be included with the whole family — we wouldn’t want her to feel excluded,” she expressed.
Best Choice Ever
For the Wright family, welcoming Emmie not only allowed them to assist a dog in need to conquer her disabilities but also helped them restore joy in their own lives. Sapphire and Kare gained a new lifelong companion.
After bringing immense happiness to the family, it didn’t take them long to realize that Emmie was meant to be part of their lives permanently.
“She’ll never face hunger again and will always have a comfortable couch to snuggle up on in the evenings. Though she may not reach old age, she will now experience a very happy and healthy life with us for as long as she is with us,” Kate concluded.
