This very connection was established between two pups who, after being apart, are once more together, thanks to the remarkable dedication of one devoted dog enthusiast.
New Best Friend
When Derrick Schmidt and his fiancée opted to cohabitate, they understood their dream of adopting a dog was finally within reach.
While browsing a shelter’s website, Derrick’s fiancée came across a picture of a puppy called Dexter. The pair instantly fell head over heels and chose to meet him.
“We arrived at the shelter and he sat down, leaning against me in the enclosure. He just stared up at me. I turned to my fiancée and declared he is ours,” Derrick recounted to GeoBeats.
After spending quality time enjoying his life with his new guardians, Dexter has taken a shine to playing in the backyard.
During his playtime, another canine would often join in the fun.
Despite Derrick’s initial hesitation about allowing a stray dog to interact with Dexter, witnessing their joyful antics made it impossible for him to refuse.
“The first time they met, they instantly began to play. It was as if they were long-lost siblings. He was right there whenever I was working in the yard, coming over to check on us,” he elaborated.
One afternoon, animal control arrived in the area, and Derrick was aware that since the stray dog was roaming without a collar, it was likely he would be taken away.
Choosing to conceal him in his garage, Derrick discovered that the dog’s owners lived just two houses away from him.
“I knocked on the door and said, ‘Animal Control was here. I put a collar on him so he wouldn’t be taken. Please ensure you keep this collar on, otherwise he risks being taken.’ The next day I saw him running around without a collar, and then he vanished,” Derrick expressed.
Even with being told it wasn’t his dog, and thus not his concern, Derrick was resolute in his quest to locate this little stray.
After phoning and visiting numerous shelters, he ultimately succeeded in finding him, shivering inside a kennel.
Pawsome Reunion
After covering the adoption fee, Derrick welcomed the puppy into his home. To ensure the dog, who was renamed Doakes, remained distant from his former owners, the small family relocated to the countryside.
The two best companions could now finally live and frolic in tranquility.
Even though they are complete opposites, with Dexter as the lively jokester and Doakes as the serene gentle soul, they cannot stand a day apart.
Dexter and Doakes are thriving in their joyful, adventurous lives, enveloped by individuals who are thoroughly enamored with them.
They adore spending their days dashing around the yard and snuggling on the couch to rejuvenate.
