Changing residences and relocating to an entirely different area is a taxing experience for all of us. We may not view it as excessively stressful, but it still has a significant effect.
Just think about how it is for our dogs. They sense the transition, too.
New furnishings, unfamiliar scents, new sensations… Everything is different!
Sharla Wilson understood that relocating would be challenging for both her and her dog. She was prepared for anything, except for Charleston to be that expressive about their relocation.
This senior pup certainly had thoughts about the move and he wasn’t going to make it easy.
If Charleston has something to convey, oh, goodness, you’ll hear him loud and clear.
Regrettably, residing in an apartment means that other residents would hear it as well.
As Charleston adjusted to the new apartment, it was evident that he was displeased, not in the slightest.
Here’s what he had to say!
Charleston’s Late Night Melodies
It turns out that Charleston’s late night melodies didn’t occur abruptly. It gradually grew as he transitioned into a new apartment in Pittsburgh with his human mom, Sharla Wilson.
Charleston has always been a talkative Pug, unlike many of his relatives.
The twelve-year-old senior canine consistently made it abundantly clear whenever he disapproved of something, whether it was his food or a shift in routine.
The cause of all that howling and being so vocal stems from the fact that Charleston is an elderly Pug who has already experienced vision loss. He doesn’t see as well as he once did, so he compensates by expressing himself to his mom.
Caring for a senior dog with cataracts, who often becomes fearful due to his inability to see his mom, is already exceptionally challenging.
Sharla believed her new neighborhood had mixed sentiments about the newcomers. Not everyone enjoys listening to a dog’s howls into the late hours.
This led Sharla to write a note for her neighbors, apologizing for Charleston’s actions.
Hello, Neighbors!
My name is Charleston Chew and I sincerely apologize for my howling.
I’m an old fellow now, with cataracts, and sometimes I get genuinely frightened because I can’t see where I am and can’t find my mom.
As I adapt to my new surroundings, I promise to start settling down.
Thank you for being understanding with me. I don’t mean to be such a nuisance.

However, Sharla was unaware that her note would become a sensation.
One neighbor found the note so charming it warranted sharing it with the larger public. The image of the note went viral on Twitter, achieving half a million likes in a brief time frame.
Fortunately, for Charleston and his mom, the neighbors didn’t really pay attention to his howling. No one claimed it disrupted their daily peace and tranquility.
Everyone appeared to appreciate the presence of such a remarkable senior canine in their building, particularly after reading the apology note.
I’m sure Charleston had to howl back a gigantic thank you for tolerating him. And, I bet it sounded something similar to this:
Sadly, one apartment in Pittsburgh has remained too quiet since June 27th, 2019.
Charleston Chew, the Pug who howled his way into our hearts, passed away at the age of 13.
This senior pooch left many heartbroken individuals behind.
Dear Charleston, we hope you’re still performing your late night melodies in doggy heaven. Rest assured that we never minded the noise, all because you were one exceptional little Pug.
