When a puppy named Cherry initially came to the Clermont County Animal Shelter, Ohio, she was not in optimal condition.
The shelter personnel felt that Cherry’s name aptly described her look, as her entire body was bright red because of a severe case of mange. Additionally, she was quite frightened by her unfamiliar environment and had little trust in the new humans around her.
Nonetheless, the staff at the Ohio shelter refused to abandon Cherry. They engaged with her daily, working to help her overcome her fears, and ultimately, they succeeded.
New Beginnings
As the shelter team observed that Cherry, who was reluctant to leave her kennel, became lively once they took her into the backyard, they understood that underneath all that trepidation, there was a playful dog eager to emerge.
“Most volunteers had to carry her outside, but once she was away from the chaos, she blossomed. It was at the park bench on that first trip when I realized her boundless affection for balls. Basketballs, weighted medicine balls, tennis balls, and even those labeled as indestructible are no match for Cherry,” shared Megan Dashley, a volunteer from the shelter, with The Dodo.
Fortunately, Cherry came to understand that the volunteers were there solely to assist her, and over time, she developed affection for them, enjoying wonderful playdates each day.
Unexpected Turn of Events
Eventually, this lovely dog caught the attention of a caring family keen to adopt her.
Everyone at the Ohio shelter was ecstatic with this development, and upon observing their wonderful connection, they harbored hopes that this temporary home would soon become a permanent one.
Sadly, due to some unexpected events, Cherry found herself back at the shelter, and she did not respond well to this change.
“She’s different. She seems uneasy. She lacks confidence. When Callie walked her yesterday, she trembled in her kennel and kept her tail tucked for most of their stroll,” reported the volunteers on Facebook.
This adorable girl is utterly perplexed and does not comprehend what occurred. She believed she had found her forever family.
Regrettably, this wasn’t her first experience. During her time at the shelter, Cherry has been adopted and brought back multiple times. The staff cannot understand why no one wishes for this charming girl to be a lasting member of their loving household.
“Outside the shelter, Cherry shines very brightly. She beams with joy when she feels secure, joyful, and tranquil,” Dashley remarked.

Cherry is a delightful girl in search of energetic humans who will be able to join her in running around to her heart’s content.
She would cherish the opportunity to have her very own yard for daily exercise, but having access to a nearby open space for her adventures would suffice as well.
