At times, I ponder: do individuals who forsake their animals on the street ever think about what occurs to them?
Are they in need of food? Where do they find a place to stay? Do they even manage to survive?
It’s conceivable that these persons swiftly move on from having had a pet, but regrettably, that animal does not so easily forget the anguish and betrayal.
Sometimes, despite the harsh act of forsaking, these unfortunate dogs still linger for their former guardians, unable to accept that their cherished humans have abandoned them.
They spend days and nights, months, and even years in the exact spot where they were discarded, yearning to catch a glimpse of a familiar face once more. It’s heartbreaking, yet tragically, it’s a grim truth that many rescuers confront daily.
A Touching Rescue
This lovely German Shepherd female emerged in a neighborhood in the City of Brea, California in March, 2024.
It was obvious that someone had clearly abandoned her there to survive on her own. Alone and forsaken, she lingered at the same corner, holding on to the hope that her owner would come back for her.
Throughout the most challenging times, her allegiance remained unshakeable – a true reflection of the character of these extraordinary dogs.
As dusk began to fall, this beautiful girl would seek refuge in one of the adjacent courtyards, resting in the same spot every night.
Fortunately, the residents showed concern for her, providing food and water, yet they couldn’t catch her since she was frightened.
“They placed food and water outside and were concerned about her. This sweet Shepherd even stood her ground and warded off two coyotes,” Suzette Hall, a local rescuer from Irvine, California, mentioned in her Facebook post.
That’s when the compassionate individuals chose to seek assistance, anxious that she wouldn’t endure for long on her own. They couldn’t idly wait for something unfortunate to occur to this sweet girl.
Swiftly, they contacted Suzette, an adept rescuer and the founder of Logan’s Legacy 29 rescue.
Rescued In Cherished Memory
When Suzette noticed that it was a Shepherd dog, her heart shattered. Her only son Logan had a deep affection for all dogs, but Shepherds particularly – they were what she fondly referred to as his “heart dogs.”
After losing Logan to a rare heart ailment, Suzette established Logan’s Legacy 29 animal rescue to honor his memory.
Shortly after they reached out to her, Suzette arrived at the scene. She found this sweet girl weary and fatigued from her time waiting on the street.
They attempted to trap her, but she became frightened and fled from them. After all she had endured, she simply didn’t understand how to trust these newcomers.
Regrettably, during the night, the rain began to pour.
Soggy, chilled from the downpour, and famished, she once again sought shelter on the homeowner’s porch.
Fortunately, this time they managed to catch her swiftly.
“I drove there and just felt in my heart today was her day. She was alert and in need of food. Cold from the rain. We set my trap and all hid away. It wasn’t even 5 minutes before this sweet girl was secure in my trap. We truly cried and embraced,” Suzette shared.
They moved her inside to avoid the rain, delighted that she was finally secure and would soon receive the assistance she required.
She no longer needs to be concerned about coyotes or whether she will sleep with an empty belly.
Hopefully, she will soon discover her permanent home and humans who will cherish and adore her endlessly.
