It is often said that something positive will always arise from suffering, and Sweet Pea would undoubtedly concur!
This charming doggy gal from California has an incredibly motivating tale to share – one that certainly hasn’t been easy. At just a few months old, she was brutally assaulted by another dog and sustained significant injuries.
Then, over a year later, another tragedy struck!
It Was A Challenging Journey
Sweet Pea (previously named Nelly) was adopted into a family when she was just a puppy. She was merely three months old when she faced an attack from a stray dog during her bathroom break.
Following the attack, her owner was unable to afford her medical care, leading Sweet Pea to be placed at Fresno Bully Rescue, located in Sanger, California. As per Bridgette Nicole Boothe, the director of FBR, she had significant injuries across her body.
“Her owner had let her outside to relieve herself when she heard a yelp and discovered that she had been attacked by a stray dog. She endured a broken arm and numerous bite marks on her head and body,” Bridgette noted in a fundraiser post.
Then came yet another sorrow! After being adopted into a new home and residing there for a year, Sweet Pea was returned to the shelter – yet again!
The couple who took her in mentioned that after they welcomed a baby, she barked excessively, which led them to surrender her.
“That family kept her for approximately a year before returning her. They claimed that after having a baby, it caused her to bark excessively and similar issues, though we’ve never observed any proof of that,” Brittany shared with GeoBeats Animals.
Instant Affection
Sweet Pea spent another eighteen months at the rescue – then, something remarkable took place! Brittany and Danny Kehrer arrived at FBR with their male dog, Larry, and they instantly connected with this sweet girl!
They drove home as a four-member family, and even though Larry was initially indifferent towards his new sister, the two adapted to each other swiftly.
It wasn’t long before this rescued girl settled into her new surroundings. Within a few days, she felt like she had belonged to the family all her life.
The Family’s Darling
Sweet Pea quickly evolved into the life of the party at home. Despite her struggles with other dogs who occasionally rejected her, she never lost her sparkle.
“Dogs often ignore her or bully her. Every so often, a special dog connects with her, and they can play for hours,” her owners commented in a video.
She radiated joy and exuded amazing affection towards everyone. She adored other dogs, humans, and particularly children.
