One of the most heartbreaking experiences is witnessing dogs being returned to shelters after being adopted, as their sorrowful and dejected expressions can evoke tears.

This situation occurs frequently and, regrettably, it also happened to the dog in today’s narrative.

Lola was returned to the shelter not once, but twice in the span of seven months.

This is why Lola was resolute in making a great impression on the next family she would join. And, that’s just what she achieved.

Third Time’s The Charm

While browsing a pet rescue site, a woman named Cristina Antonucci found Lola’s striking black-and-white face captivating.

Reminded of her childhood dog, an English Bull Terrier cross, Christina decided to meet this adorable puppy in person.

“I remember seeing her sorrowful eyes in the picture and just knew I had to take her home. She arrived with her foster mum and was the sweetest little thing, immediately sitting on my feet and gazing up at me,” told Christina to The Dodo.

Lola’s initial adoption, when she was merely a tiny puppy, was by a teenager who renamed her Gucci Rose and returned her to the shelter after some time. Her second adoption ended in the same manner as the owner, who lacked prior dog ownership experience, wasn’t adequately equipped to tend to her requirements.

As soon as she learned about Lola’s unfortunate history, Christina was resolute. She committed to adopting this sweet puppy and furnishing her with the home she rightly deserved.

Upon arriving at her new residence, Lola promptly demonstrated to Christina how grateful she was for the help.

“The first night I took her home, she simply lay on me for hours, hugging me. I was taken aback by how fast she warmed up to me, having spent only the drive home with her prior. It was as if she felt incredibly thankful, which is why I also realized I couldn’t let her down,” Christina recounted.

New Life

Sadly, all of her previous experiences left an impression on Lola, leading her to engage in some behaviors that weren’t quite appropriate.

Fortunately, her new guardians recognized her situation and exhibited immense patience from the beginning.

“We faced challenges with her digging in the backyard and attempting to get through the fence to interact with the neighbor’s dog. It clearly tested our patience, but we acknowledged that if we didn’t exercise patience, no one else would,” she remarked.

Even during these difficult periods, Christina was grateful for Lola, as she imparted very important life lessons.

“Lola has undoubtedly taught me patience and resilience. You can’t just surrender despite the obstacles. No one is flawless,” she added.

Fortunately, her digging phase was short-lived, as Lola shifted her role and became a backyard possum monitor instead.

Another factor that aided this transition was the introduction of a new baby brother, Lenny.

Lola became the most elated big sister, knowing she now had the most adorable little friend to play with.

“They are now the best of pals and spend all day playing together. Although they have only been together for a month and a half, they adore each other. They even share the same bed,” she noted.

Realizing that she succeeded in providing Lola with a home where she could thrive and be joyful filled Christina with joy.

And, the minor difficulties at the beginning made this all the more rewarding.

“The highlight of my day is simply coming home and enjoying moments with her. She truly holds a unique place in my heart,” Christina concluded.
