Searching The Rubble
In 2022, Stray Rescue of St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri, received a notification regarding a dog residing in an abandoned, rundown apartment complex. Donna Lochmann, the chief life-saving officer at the shelter, promptly moved to the location with her team.
Upon arriving at the apartment complex, they commenced their search for the dog, but she was nowhere to be found.
After thoroughly checking all levels of the building and ensuring there were no other occupants, they returned to the shelter.
The temperature was dropping, and more reports kept coming in about sightings of dogs in that same building.
Lochmann went back to the structure to investigate again.
“When I reached the back of the building, I spotted a dog resting in the grass. I noticed her dash towards the rear of the building and disappear inside, so I decided to follow her.”
Upon entering the building, the canine was no longer visible.
Realizing the difficulty of searching multiple apartments alone, she headed back to the shelter and requested assistance from her colleagues in the search effort.
The next day, Lochmann and her team returned to continue the search for the pup.
Overwhelmed By Fear
Back at the “crime scene,” Lochmann and her team detected some sounds. Barking was coming from one of the apartments.
“I approached and found a poor dog lying amidst the wreckage of this building. She appeared to be shaking uncontrollably, her legs quivering intensely,” said Lochmann.
As she moved closer to the dog, the pup began to shake even more. Lochmann was devastated to witness how frightened she was.
It had been a long time since she observed a dog in such a state of fear. While comforting her in a soothing tone, Lochmann offered her some food. The dog gazed back at her with a glimmer of hope.
The team decided to call her Habanero.
Lochmann wanted to avoid alarming Habanero any further, so instead of using a leash to extract her from the building, she and her team carefully helped the pup into a portable crate.
Once Habanero was inside the crate, she appeared to feel at ease. Lochmann gently carried her to the vehicle.
Upon arriving at the shelter, Habanero underwent a comprehensive medical examination.
She was in overall good condition, but she still felt anxious, and she growled and trembled as her rescuers approached her.
The Healing Power Of Love
After several days, Habanero began to relax, no longer shaking. Her caretakers showered her with affection and the pup felt cherished and supported. She reciprocated with numerous kisses.
