The tale of Kernel exemplifies this truth. He not only assisted two women in finding solace, but he also aided them in navigating their sorrow. Let’s explore how their journey began.
Encounter in the Woods
While strolling through the woods with her Great Dane, Kernel, in Boston, Massachusetts, Alyssa encountered an elderly couple, Cal and Maura, who were also on a hike.
Alyssa was touched by their friendliness and the way they beamed whenever they glimpsed Kernel.
At that point, Kernel was facing a trying moment in his life. He was contending with End Stage Ear Disease. Meeting Cal and Maura brightened his day and immediately uplifted his spirits.
As Kernel leaned against Cal, he rested his head on Cal’s shoulder, as if seeking solace from an old companion. The connection between them appeared instantaneous. Cal accepted the drool on his shoulder with laughter.
The couple adored Kernel, and he reciprocated their affection.
After a while, Alyssa came across Maura again, but this time the older woman was alone. Upon learning about Cal’s passing, Alyssa was shattered, unable to hold back the tears streaming down her cheeks. She had not anticipated such somber news.
Cal’s departure brought back memories of her grandparents who raised her following her mother’s death.
Maura and Alyssa reminisced about their initial meeting in the woods and Cal’s laughter that day. Maura still treasures a recording of that laughter – his final one.
An Everlasting Companion
The sorrow and loss they both endured drew them nearer, and Alyssa believes they “both mutually bring each other joy in different manners.”
On Mother’s Day, Maura extended an invitation to Alyssa and Kernel for dinner. They were both thrilled to visit her for the first time. Alyssa felt that Cal would have desired Maura to connect with her and Kernel.
“This weathered bench is the last place where Maura and Cal strolled together, and it’s also where we first met, so it feels as though Cal orchestrated our meeting.”
A New Grandmother
Alyssa operates an off-leash dog hiking business. Maura joins her and the pack on hikes weekly. She has taken on the role of the pack’s Grandma. Alyssa is convinced that Kernel and the pack have provided Maura “that feeling of camaraderie, all while immersing her in nature.”
