Anyone who has ever had a dog understands that one of their favorite activities is to run around and play. Mental engagement is crucial for them.

This is the reason we take them for walks or arrange playdates at the park. It’s entertaining and also provides them an opportunity to socialize. But what if that wasn’t the reality for some dogs?

River was born with a very uncommon condition. She had swimmer syndrome, which essentially meant that her legs extended outwards.

This led to numerous difficulties in her life. She couldn’t walk properly, but this wouldn’t deter her from reaching her aspirations. Before long, she would encounter someone who would entirely transform her life.

A Distinct Challenge

When Jen and Mike lost their dog, they were utterly heartbroken. Nevertheless, they sought a way to pay tribute to her memory, so they resolved to continue assisting dogs with special needs.

One dog that drew their attention was River. Due to her swimmer syndrome, this family was eager to provide her a new opportunity to walk and relish her life.

Jen told The Dodo: “We found out very last minute that River required another foster home. So, we went and picked her up, and we began to foster her.

Upon bringing her into their home in Washington, they discovered that River integrated seamlessly. The family had no difficulties introducing her to the other dogs present.

They welcomed River warmly, and she reciprocated the affection. She bonded with Hogan, who was always supportive of her.

When deliberating on how to address her swimmer syndrome, Jen and Mike recognized that she had not received any intervention for her condition.

This could lead to complications in the future as swimmer syndrome is typically treated shortly after birth.

Nevertheless, River’s new foster family was resolute in their commitment to assist her in walking again. They took her to see experts in Washington who could address her needs.

Jen stated: “They provided rigorous hydrotherapy, some conventional physical therapy, along with acupuncture.

Her foster family acknowledged how challenging this was for her, but she was fortunate to have them and Hogan beside her throughout the entire process.

They supported her in adapting to all the transitions and facilitated her recovery journey significantly. Jen felt immense pride in Hogan for being such a wonderful companion to River.

After roughly a month of treatment, this dog showed remarkable progress. She became much better at utilizing her legs for daily activities.

Her foster parents were astonished at how effective her treatment turned out to be. Mike mentioned: “Out of nowhere, she began to sprint outside. Watching her, it’s almost as if I wished to experience that level of freedom.

Upon realizing just how deeply they cared for her, they simply couldn’t let her go, so they opted to adopt her.
