Though we frequently hear anecdotes about indifferent owners abandoning their pets in shelters for trivial reasons, the reality isn’t always that straightforward.

One might argue that the individual who left his ailing dog at the New York shelter possessed a heartless nature, but the actuality is somewhat different. Caring for a pet can sometimes incur significant expenses, particularly when it falls ill, and not everyone is capable of handling such financial strains.

This is why the choice to leave a cherished pet in a shelter is profoundly challenging, yet at times, it is the correct course of action. The man previously mentioned made precisely that choice and might have ultimately saved his dog’s life.

When a dog named Keyla arrived at the Manhattan Animal Care Center in New York, her alarming skin condition made it difficult to look at her.

As per Newsweek, Lois Huang from the Animal Care Centers of NYC (NYCACC) noted that the origins of her severe skin issues were unknown. Nevertheless, they understood why she was surrendered to their shelter.

“Keyla was handed over to Manhattan ACC last year when her owner could no longer cope with her severe skin problems,” the shelter’s Facebook post stated.

Huang mentioned that her now-former owner had attempted to treat Keyla with antibiotics, hoping for an improvement in her condition, but unfortunately, that did not occur.

Consequently, “he expressed a desire for her to have a more favorable life with someone capable of providing the needed care.”

Even though this moment was tremendously challenging for the man, his decision would soon be validated.

According to the earlier Facebook post, Keyla’s skin complications were so serious that the shelter lacked the resources to provide the essential care. Fortunately, one kind-hearted individual recognized this unfortunate dog and opted to assist

“Fortunately, our longstanding volunteer Susan Kuhlman spotted Keyla at Manhattan ACC and took her to her husband Jay Kuhlman’s veterinary practice Gramercy Park Animal Hospital,” Huang remarked.

With the veterinarians at this animal hospital possessing significant experience treating shelter animals facing skin issues, the staff was confident they didn’t need to be concerned about Keyla’s future. They soon proved correct, as her condition was indeed improving day by day.

“Since September of 2023, Keyla has been under their care, and her condition has improved remarkably, along with a healthy weight increase,” the shelter noted in the Facebook post. “She has been spayed and is receiving regular treatments including antibiotics, anti-yeast medications, and Cytopoint, an antibody utilized to treat atopic dermatitis in dogs.”

Today, months after her initial veterinary care, Keyla is a transformed dog. She has made significant progress on her journey to full recovery and has even managed to impress the veterinary personnel along the way.

“In spite of the pain caused by her skin condition, Keyla’s tenacious spirit shines throughout her recovery process,” they declared.

A truly remarkable soul Keyla is.

While in the veterinary facility, the shelter personnel successfully located a foster home for Keyla. The individual who opted to offer her a temporary residence sang her praises.

“Keyla is an exceptionally sweet and gentle little girl with a tail that’s always wagging. It speeds up even more when she sees you. She is sociable with other dogs and seems to appreciate cats. Keyla adores all people, including children. Since she is motivated by treats, she is easy to teach. By the way, Keyla is a perfectly sized little companion, neither too large nor too small. She would make a wonderful addition to any household.” a foster shared according to the NYCACC website

Taking all this into account, along with the commendations from the shelter and hospital staff regarding her, it appears that Keyla is indeed a dog who can bring joy and blessings to any household.

This is why we are convinced that this brave and resilient pup would soon discover her happy ending, as she has earned nothing less after all she has endured.

@nycacc We were amazed by Keyla’s transformation when we visited her at Gramercy Park Animal Hospital! A big thank you to Susan Kuhlman, ACC board member Dr. Jay Kuhlman, and the attentive staff at Gramercy Park Animal Hospital, who aid numerous ACC pets like Keyla.
