Once we bring a pet into our lives, we instantly become their guardians, closest companions, and defenders. Our affection for them runs deep, and we welcome them into our households.
My heart aches for all the vulnerable creatures that have endured abuse and treachery rather than receiving love and attention.
The start of Violet’s tale serves as a poignant reminder of animal mistreatment. Lets trace her path toward the joy that every animal is entitled to.
Rescuing Violet
Violet, a female English Mastiff, was carelessly thrown from a vehicle on Gallahan Road, located in Clinton, Maryland. Bystanders who observed this horrific incident promptly halted their vehicle and rushed to save her.
They hurried her to Prince George County Animal Control. That same day, she was relocated to Mutts Matter Rescue, a charitable dog rescue organization that collaborates with shelters and supports critical cases like this.
Debbie Gretz, one of their dedicated volunteers, took her in. Having previously cared for malnourished and mistreated dogs, she was equipped to assist Violet.
Debbie recounted her initial encounter with her.
“She was on the brink of death. Two individuals carried her into my residence, swaddled in a blanket. For three days, she did not stand… When she finally rose, it was like witnessing a skeleton rising. When she approached me, her tiny tail wagging, that moment instilled hope in my heart.”
Debbie wept upon witnessing the dire state Violet was in. The results from her blood tests revealed the harsh aftermath of her extensive starvation.
She was resolute in her commitment to restore Violet’s health and provide the affection and attention that had been denied to her throughout her existence.
The first time she embraced her, Violet felt like a collection of bones. She weighed a mere 52 pounds. Ideally, female Mastiffs should weigh between 130 to 220 pounds.
“She has numerous pressure sores all across her body. There are two on her legs that expose her bones, so they are treating those as well… Initially, she had to remain in the basement, unable to navigate the stairs unaided,” said Autumn Clayton, another volunteer with Mutts Matter Rescue.
The individuals responsible for rescuing Violet suspected that she had been confined and exploited for breeding, leading to the pressure sores attributed to the chains.
The Path to Healing
Debbie observed that Violet felt very fearful outdoors. “I can only speculate that she may have never experienced the outside world. She gazes up at the skies and trees as if they were entirely new to her.”
Violet’s injuries were so severe that The Humane Society of the United States announced a $5000 reward for any leads on her abusers. Sadly, they were never discovered.
In time, Violet recognized she could trust Debbie, often resting her chin in her lap, this was her way of expressing her affection.
Over time, Violet became progressively stronger, eventually weighing 138 pounds. She could ascend the stairs and enjoy lengthy walks. Her sores healed, and she delighted in playtime with her companions.
Her recovery journey was challenging, but through Debbie’s unwavering dedication and boundless affection, Violet triumphed. She was no longer despondent and forlorn. Her expression radiated joyful happiness.
Violet found a forever home, and her family adores her immensely.
In 2021, Violet and her family made a trip to visit Debbie in Idaho Falls, and it was a joyful reunion.
We extend our heartfelt appreciation to Debbie, Violet’s cherished family, and everyone who played a part in her rescue.
