When we invite dogs into our lives, we commit to ensuring their safety and providing them with the unconditional affection they warrant.
It shatters my heart to realize that numerous dog guardians violate that commitment and ultimately abandon their pets. When a dog experiences abandonment, their emotions are damaged, and their faith in humanity is shattered.
Squishy is one such forsaken canine who experienced emotional pain as well. After being left on the beach, Squishy ceased to trust humans.
Let’s explore the start of her journey.
Declining Rescue
Squishy was abandoned on the shores of Saipan, Mariana Islands. She was terrified, snarling and growling at anyone attempting to approach her.
Recognizing that the puppy was in desperate need of assistance, beachgoers contacted Boonie Babies Rescue.
Upon receiving the alert, Aria Keilbach, the rescue’s founder, rushed to the beach. She was disheartened to discover Squishy in such dreadful condition. She was fatigued and extremely dehydrated. She attempted to hydrate by drinking sea water.
Squishy wore a collar. Keilbach deduced that the puppy had been deserted either that day or a couple of days prior. The dog was malnourished and suffered from tick illness and mange. It was clear she had been overlooked for weeks.
As Keilbach and the rescue team drew nearer to her, Squishy began barking and growling in their direction.
While she attempted to appear valiant and strong around them, Squishy had no energy left in her body.
They effortlessly captured her and saved her. Unaware that she was now in safe hands, she remained petrified.
Understanding Trust
After several hours, she began to relax. She understood that these individuals were there to assist her and that they meant her no harm.
She ceased barking and began wagging her tail whenever her rescuers came near.
“By that same evening, she was tentatively accepting affection and offering kisses.”
The affection and attention she received greatly aided her swift recovery.
“As remarkable as her physical metamorphosis has been, her personality development has been equally, if not more, astonishing,” Aria remarked.
When Aria rescued her, Squishy was frightened and uncertain about her surroundings. Now, she is a self-assured and intelligent dog, eager to discover new things.
She delights in embarking on escapades and enjoys socializing with other dogs. She has formed numerous friendships.
One of her preferred activities is working for treats.
Initially, Keilbach aimed to assist Squishy in her recovery and find her a permanent home. She attempted diligently not to develop affection for her, but as time passed, it became evident that she could no longer resist the bond.
Having rescued over 300 dogs in Saipan, it was Squishy who captured her heart. After witnessing her extraordinary transformation, she knew she couldn’t part ways with her.
Squishy was elated because she remained with her guardian, Aria. She was the individual who transformed her life and made her the happiest dog in existence.
