Upon discovering a litter of puppies ensnared in a storm drain, a worried citizen was uncertain about what actions to take, leading him to contact the fire department for assistance.

Fortunately, dedicated firefighters are accustomed to responding to situations like these and are always prepared to provide aid. They hurried to the location, hoping they could rescue the unfortunate pups.

A Colorado Springs Fire Department unit promptly managed to rescue what they thought were eight black puppies within just a few minutes.

To their astonishment, they soon realized that the newborns were, in reality, baby red foxes!

Fire Captain, Brian Vaughan, mentioned to Inside Edition that the responders initially believed they were “newborn black Labrador puppies and were frankly troubled by this apparent case of dog abandonment.”

A search of the vicinity was conducted, but the mother was not found.

After rescuing the eight small creatures from the storm drain, the firefighters opted to transport them to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region for their care.

It was there that everyone discovered that the ‘puppies’ they had saved were actually baby red foxes.

“They took them [to the shelter] and one of the veterinarians at that location stated, ‘No, these aren’t Labradors, these are foxes,” said Fire Captain Vaughn. “[The firefighter] was completely astonished.”

Instead of puppies, the eight were actually eight baby foxes with deep red coats!

The veterinarian clarified that “the area where the baby foxes were discovered is situated in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, making fox sightings quite common.”

The firefighters were utterly surprised. It hadn’t even crossed their minds that the pups might not actually be puppies.
