Welcoming a dog into your household is a choice that transcends merely acquiring a pet.

This canine frequently becomes a crucial member of your family, establishing a relationship that goes beyond the conventional pet-owner dynamic.

Dogs possess a remarkable capacity to comprehend and connect with our feelings, granting us a profound sense of purpose, and cultivating an extraordinary bond that genuinely elevates them beyond just a pet.

Karen Scanlan has been a dog guardian for an extensive period, but adopting an adult German Shepherd completely transformed her life.

This moving experience not only revealed to her what genuine affection is, but it also enlightened her that often the most significant connections are built with those who communicate using woofs and barks.

This narrative captures Karen’s personal reflection on a touching experience that entirely shifted her perspective on life and her views about adult dogs.

In 2018, Karen Scanlan, a human resources specialist from Vancouver, Canada, learned about a six-year-old German Shepherd needing rescue.

The dog’s former guardians were separating, and they needed someone to take their dog. Karen was exhilarated to bring such a lovely girl into her household.

However, bringing Sheba into their family environment was not all flowers and sunshine.

“Sheba was difficult and distant. She reacted to my training by chewing my slipper and relieving herself in my office,” remarked Karen, in her personal column for CBC

Unsure of how to manage a difficult adult dog, Karen reached out to a good friend who had experience with this type of dog.

What her friend conveyed profoundly impacted her and enlightened her perspective.

He stated, “You may have won the battle, but you’re losing the war. She’s had enough authority figures. She first needs to feel this is a nurturing home.”

And then, everything shifted.

Sheba, The Educator

From that point forward, Sheba became their one true affection.

Karen expressed that that marked “the tale of an older dog acquiring new skills”, but the older dog she referenced was not Sheba.

The older dog was actually Karen, while Sheba took on the role of the educator.

She supported them through the pandemic, aided them in fixing their home, but above all, she imparted to them the essence of true love.

“She possessed an intrinsic sense of empathy,” Karen noted. “In countless ways, she demonstrated her happiness that we welcomed her, reminding us of the need to show gratitude and affection — and not take it for granted.”

Sheba was the type of dog that would never instigate a confrontation. When a small, hostile dog approached her at the park, she would cower, even though she was much larger.

One day, while walking along the seawall with Sheba, a man halted them and requested a favor.

As it turned out, his girlfriend had recently lost her German Shepherd, and he believed that spending some time with Sheba might help mend her broken heart.

And, as if Sheba had sensed this, she promptly went to the woman and settled in her lap. At that moment, the woman broke down in tears and enveloped Sheba in an embrace.

This was just one of the many proud instances showcasing Sheba’s profound empathy.

Regrettably, in January 2020, the family received the sorrowful news of a terminal cancer diagnosis for Sheba.

They were heartbroken, but aimed to keep her comfortable and joyful in her final days.

Without Sheba, their home feels eerily quiet and vacant, Karen reflects. Yet, that silence has allowed them to contemplate all the teachings Sheba imparted, and there were numerous.

Sheba taught them to allow others time to trust them instead of expecting immediate acceptance. She also instructed them to welcome individuals for who they are rather than attempting to change them.

Ultimately, she demonstrated that there are countless methods to express gratitude and affection, particularly when words fail.

Although Sheba could not verbalize, she instinctively understood how to console individuals and convey love through her actions.

“They claim you can’t teach an older dog new tricks. But, Sheba debunked that notion. She enlightened this older dog in countless ways,” Karen concluded her narrative.

Beyond their wagging tails and moist noses, dogs truly are remarkable beings from whom we can glean immense knowledge.

Karen, thank you for sharing your touching narrative. The lessons from Sheba have imparted valuable insights to us as well.
