A bunch of leisure cyclists were traversing their standard route when a solitary cardboard container discarded near the bridge prompted them to apply their brakes.
Although encountering a cardboard box left by the side of the road isn’t extraordinary, it was the unusual faint sounds emanating from within that piqued their curiosity.
Uncertain of what it might be, the cyclists dismounted their bicycles and approached the box to investigate.
Upon peering inside, they were confronted with a heart-wrenching sight. They simply couldn’t fathom how anyone could perform such an unthinkable deed.
Without hesitating, they swiftly grabbed their phones and reached out for assistance.
A Heartbreaking Discovery
Within the confines of this cardboard box were nine pitifully abandoned puppies struggling for survival. Six of the puppies were merely two weeks old, with their eyes still shut. All of them were severely infested with fleas and whimpering from hunger.
Just the thought of these tiny pups being forsaken, utterly defenseless and alone in a world they are yet to comprehend, is profoundly tragic.
They were left to endure discomfort, yearning for the love and nourishment they were robbed of from such an early age. Fortunately, the cyclists were compassionate enough to pause and seek assistance, offering them at least a ray of hope for survival.
The caregivers of PAWSsion Project were notified by the cyclist who witnessed the distressing incident.
Heartbroken, the rescuers rushed to retrieve the forsaken puppies.
PAWSsion Project is among the animal shelters that continue to advocate for the discarded and voiceless animals in a location where some individuals still perceive animals as mere objects to be discarded.
Even though they are accustomed to dealing with many abandoned creatures, they still struggle to comprehend how someone could be so heartless as to simply discard tiny puppies to survive on their own.
As stated by Malou Perez, the founder of PAWSsion Project, at the time of the rescue, they were already overwhelmed with over 600 animals across their two facilities.
Despite the lack of space to accommodate nine additional dogs, they simply could not refuse these pups.
“We are always just devastated. But also, [we felt] grateful that we had the opportunity to rescue them, especially since they were already within our reach,” Perez shared with The Dodo.
Hopeful Days Are on the Horizon
Upon arrival at the rescue, the puppies had to first be isolated for quarantine and be treated for ticks and fleas.
The caretakers also needed to bottle-feed the puppies every couple of hours as they lacked their mother. It was a substantial effort, but undoubtedly fulfilling.
Two weeks post-rescue, the young puppies began opening their eyes and eating significantly more. Additionally, their wounds from flea and tick bites were slowly mending.
“It’s always one of the most gratifying feelings,” Perez remarked.
The rescue organization aspires to find each of them a new home very soon, once they are mature enough and ready for a foster or permanent home.
They also hope to place some of them together but will exert every effort to secure the finest homes possible. It’s the least these unfortunate pups are entitled to.
Ultimately, the rescue group sought to remind everyone about the crucial importance of spaying and neutering to avert unwanted litters, along with the significance of adoption.
It’s the sole route to a more promising future, devoid of innocent animals left in desolate places to suffer unnecessarily.
