The harsh truth for numerous abandoned dogs is a desperate search for another opportunity at existence.

Not every dog striving for a sanctuary to call home actually secures one, but fortunately, Reggie was among the lucky ones. Previously a solitary, ailing, and undernourished stray, he was rescued by a compassionate veterinarian who fell in love with him and chose to grant him a second opportunity.

Reggie might have had an unfortunate beginning, but with his remarkable new family, life improved significantly.

Reggie was discovered malnourished in a junkyard on an island. He battled multiple illnesses and was nearly at death’s door.

If he hadn’t been saved at that moment, it’s likely he would not have made it.

The healing journey was challenging, but at the animal clinic, he encountered the individual who would ultimately save his life.

“I spotted him, and our eyes just connected. He was whimpering and insisting on being in my arms and returning home with me. He was still in the recuperation stage, but had weathered the worst parts,” Allie, Reggie’s mom, shared with GeoBeats Animals.

At first, Reggie was quite a skittish dog and exhibited a reactivity problem (he would leap and bark at everything).

At that time, Allie, who was in training to become a veterinarian, engaged in extensive training and modifications with him. Everything needed to be done gradually.

During that period, both she and her then-boyfriend (now husband) fell in love with this dog, and they were determined to take him back to North Carolina.

Now, Reggie is a playful and cheerful dog, constantly performing cartwheels and racing around the garden. He belongs to a large family that includes three dogs and four cats.

All of them came from diverse backgrounds requiring substantial aid, but they are currently living their happiest lives.

Over the years, the family has also hosted numerous foster animals. “It’s tough to decline in the veterinary field when you encounter pets that need assistance,” Allie stated.

Nevertheless, Reggie has always been an outstanding foster parent.

He introduces the fosters to the toys and shows them how to engage properly, which illustrates how much he has developed after being surrounded by affectionate humans and animals.

“He adores everyone, and he no longer has the anxieties he once did,” Allie remarked.

Even though he is a significantly healthier dog than during his time in the junkyard, Reggie still faces some medical concerns.

Allie mentioned that Reggie has a portosystemic liver shunt, which essentially is a vessel that redirects blood away from the liver instead of delivering it there.

This condition increases his vulnerability to various ailments, but thanks to a nutritious diet and regular monitoring, he is managing well. “We both believe we share an extraordinary connection with him. He’s been through every challenge I’ve faced in the past eight years. He is undoubtedly our heart dog. We simply cherish every day as another precious day with him.”
