Dory, a German Shepherd, found herself in a challenging situation after plummeting from a 300-foot-high sheer cliff on a hiking path in Ecola State Park, located in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Following her fall, she became ensnared on the rocks as the location was only reachable via rappelling from the trail.
The swift response of the United States Coast Guard reaffirmed that humans and dogs are indeed the ultimate companions in the world!
Dory Sustained Injury to Her Hind Leg During the Fall
After her unfortunate descent, Dory injured her hind leg and was unable to move from the rocky beach. The location was positioned above a secluded area of the beach, which was unreachable from land.
At approximately 7 P.M., the Fire Department received a call regarding the trapped Dory, prompting the crew to redirect the call to the Coast Guard.
Heroic Rescue by the Coast Guard Air Station Astoria Crew
The Astoria Air Station sprang into swift action, dispatching a helicopter to the scene. About an hour and a half after receiving the call, the aircrew sent down a rescue swimmer and lowered him into the water.
The swimmer reached the shore and approached Dory safely, who was frightened at that moment. As the waves crashed around her, she attempted to evade the water, but her injury left her barely able to move.
The rescuer, Clayton Maidlow, carefully placed her in the rescue basket, and the two were lifted back to the helicopter.
She had been there for quite some time. She’d been wet, chilly, terrified, and in pain. At that moment, I believe she was just relieved to see someone else with her, stated Clayton.
Fearful but Grateful for the Rescue
Despite still being in shock from the fall and the realization that she was abandoned on a rocky shore, Dory displayed a very gentle demeanor throughout the rescue.
Upon reaching the helicopter, she was incredibly sociable, almost as if she was expressing gratitude to the crew for her rescue.
Dory’s owner felt immense relief when she was finally back on solid ground. She embraced Clayton and expressed her thanks to him and the entire team for saving her beautiful dog.
After enduring such a distressing ordeal, Dory was at last safe with her owner. She received treatment for her leg shortly after her rescue.
Fortunately, this brave dog sustained no severe injuries, and none of her bones were fractured. Given the height from which she fell, her relatively sound state was almost miraculous.
Over the past year, this courageous crew has been performing exceptionally well, rescuing at least five individuals from the same area where this German Shepherd was located.
We wish Dory a swift healing and an abundance of affection in her comfortable home in Oregon. She surely deserves it!
