The recent Park Fire has significantly impacted Butte County, California. Individuals residing nearby had to evacuate their residences, leaving all belongings behind.

Among those affected was a dog owner with his two Rottweilers and their puppies, who attempted to flee the blaze when his vehicle malfunctioned.

Regrettably, he was compelled to forsake the vehicle, leaving the entire canine family in what appeared to be a dire predicament.

Honorable Action

The man urgently communicated to responders the precise location of the truck, clinging to hope for a favorable outcome.

“The resident had no choice but to leave the vehicle behind, which housed two adult Rottweilers and their puppies. The owner informed responders of the truck’s site, but access to the area was not immediate due to the fire,” wrote Butte County Sheriff in a Facebook announcement.

Fortunately, one individual opted to attempt the rescue. Trevor Skraggs, from Butte County Sheriff’s Search & Rescue, California, flew to the wildfire area via helicopter to endeavor to save the needy canine family.

Having been dropped off more than a mile away from the designated site, Skraggs promptly sprang into action. He searched the vicinity thoroughly until he finally discovered the vehicle that matched the description.

Upon opening it, he found the mother Rottweiler and all of her puppies alive, albeit extremely fatigued and thirsty. Tragically, the male Rottweiler did not survive.

Skraggs recognized that time was crucial, and that the real challenge was navigating the furry family back to the helicopter. However, he accomplished it remarkably!

After providing the Rottweiler family with essential hydration and a protein bar, the man commenced his task.

“After supplying the mother and her puppies with water and pieces from his protein bar, Trevor managed to lead all five of them 1.5 miles back to the helicopter,” BCS added.

The Mother And Her Puppies Are Secure

Within hours, the dog family was safely aboard the helicopter alongside their rescuer. Despite the misfortune and their need for recovery, the dogs appeared immensely grateful for their rescue.

Skraggs successfully delivered the dogs to North Valley Animal Disaster Group, where they were received for additional care.

Skraggs’ courageous deed made headlines nationwide within a few days. Upon reading about this honorable rescue operation, individuals expressed their gratitude to this compassionate man!

“Mr. Skaggs, thank you for your enormous heart in rescuing those dogs. You’re a true hero with your heart in the right place. We can’t thank you enough,” wrote one Facebook user.

“Thank you immensely for assisting and saving them,” remarked another.

The mother and her puppies are currently recovering, but they will soon be reunited with their owner.

“Mom and the puppies are doing excellently, and the owner will be reuniting with them this evening. We will miss them,” NVADG posted on Facebook.

Thank you, Trevor! We certainly need more individuals like you!
