True canine enthusiasts will never grasp how to satisfactorily bid farewell to their cherished animal. The farewell occasion is never simple, and dealing with the void after they depart is likely the most challenging aspect.

While the retirement of K9 dogs isn’t inherently negative, as these dogs typically transition to a loving household to enjoy their hard-earned retirement, saying farewell to them is a nightmare for handlers.

As The Dodge County Sheriff’s Office embraced new service dogs into their unit, another one just concluded its final shift. K9 Tek and his handler, Lieutenant Taylor Nehls, had to separate as Tek achieved his well-deserved retirement.

Tek’s Career Initiated In 2017

Tek was formally welcomed at the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office in Wisconsin as the third K9 unit in 2017. He and his handler, Nehls, were sworn in for duty, and from that moment on, they became unbreakable partners.

Their goal was not only to be a “reactive force,” but to “actively engage with the community.” Their responsibilities included, among other duties, to “connect with children and educate them about drugs and alternative life choices,” as stated by Sheriff Dale Schmidt.

And, indeed, they accomplished all of that. They served the Dodge community admirably for nearly six years, with over three-hundred deployments together.

Over 300 Deployments And Nearly 100 Arrests

Tek was indeed an excellent companion. Along with his partner, Nehls, he actively participated in over 300 deployments and was also involved in nearly one hundred arrests. These remarkable figures were confirmed during the final radio call he received on his last day of duty.

“Thank you, Tek, for serving the residents of Dodge County with over 98 arrests, 314 deployments, and for ensuring the safety of our deputies and other agencies with each and every shift. And for making sure your partner came home safely every night.”

This was an incredibly emotional moment for his handler, who struggled to hold back tears. It was as if Tek was aware that this was his final day, as he aligned with his handler’s feelings, snuggling against his face and giving him wet, tender kisses.

Formally, Tek served the Sheriff’s Office for five and a half years, which equates to thirty-eight and a half dog years, an astounding feat.

He ensured that his work partner returned home safely each night, and today, he accomplished that mission!

The positive news is that Tek remains with the family! He will spend his retirement days in Wisconsin alongside his devoted handler, Lieutenant Nehls, and his wonderful family!

They have already acclimated to this German canine years ago, making Tek’s transition to a new family life a breeze!

Nehls and Tek’s response to the final radio call was heartwarming, and the video quickly gained popularity, touching the hearts of countless individuals worldwide.

The concluding part of the call was particularly poignant:

“You can now enjoy your well-deserved rest, pursue rabbits instead of wrongdoers, and relish your well-earned belly rubs and back scratches.”

Well done, Tek! We trust that family life will suit you perfectly and that your upcoming adventures will be just as delightful! Rest well, good boy!
