Against All Odds: A Unique Stray Dog’s Journey to Finding Joy

The forebears of dogs are wolves, a fact known to many of us. While numerous individuals admire creatures like wolves, most prefer to express that admiration from afar, even in relation to a dog possessing just a trace of wolf DNA.

This mindset has spawned misconceptions about wolfdogs, which have even impacted regulations in certain areas.

Moreover, laws must be adhered to… regardless of the destiny they impose on these frequently gentle and innocent beings.

The DNA Assessment Uncovered Everything

In 2022, an extraordinary visitor arrived at the shelter of the McKinley County Humane Society in Gallup, New Mexico.

Even though it was a dog, the shelter personnel discerned that it was somewhat unique. Zayne, the name they bestowed upon him, exhibited distinct physical and behavioral characteristics that led them to suspect he might actually be a wolfdog.

This prompted them to contact an expert, Katie Forbis, an associate of the Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary in New Mexico.

“Though he seemed distinct compared to a typical husky mix, he lacked any noticeable wolf phenotypes or physical traits—implying he could just as easily be a type of northern breed mix,” Katie remarked in an interview with Newsweek.

Consequently, they decided the best course of action was to conduct a DNA test, which they proceeded to perform. Results revealed that this distinctive dog indeed possessed 22% wolf DNA, categorizing him in the low-content wolfdog group.

Regrettably, this revelation brought along certain complications…

The Legislation Rendered Adoption Unattainable

Even though the percentage of wolf DNA is minimal, it still classifies this being within the wolfdog category.

Legislation in certain states, municipalities, and counties in the U.S., including McKinley County, explicitly states that owning a wolfdog is illegal.

“Wolfdogs endure a similar prejudice as the Pitbull breed, albeit on a notably more intense and contentious level,” Forbis noted. “Wolfdogs of any percentage are entirely prohibited in McKinley County. Should someone possess a wolfdog in a restricted area, it could result in seizure and euthanasia for the animal if discovered.”

This is why the sanctuary’s staff quickly sprang into action to save Zayne from a dire outcome and secure him a home he merits.

However, despite their utmost efforts, most sanctuaries were either at capacity or simply uninterested in accepting a low-content wolfdog.

Nonetheless, they could not easily permit this wolfdog to be subjected to the harshness of the merciless law. Hence, they resolved, despite being at full capacity themselves, to take him in.

“We couldn’t turn our backs on an animal in need who was less than two hours away,” Forbis articulated.

Sanctuary Supporters Became Fond of Him

The sanctuary promptly shared on their official Facebook page that following a visit to the veterinary clinic, Zayne is en route to his new residence.

“Of course, we also made a stop on the journey home to get him a new toy since he’s been having a “ruff” week,” they mentioned.

Sadly, shortly after adoption, he was diagnosed with degenerative myelopathy, a genetic neurological disorder. This condition affects the spinal cord, causing gradual hind limb weakness and paralysis.

Regardless of the circumstances, the sanctuary staff had no intention of giving up on this wonderful creature. They were taking Zayne for frequent walks and dedicating ample time to play with him to help maintain his muscle mass and enhance his quality of life.

Additionally, there were frequent updates about him on Facebook, leading many of his supporters to become enamored with him.

The pinnacle of the situation was the surprise that these supporters organized for him.

The video below illustrates just how meaningful this is for this “slightly different” dog.

This wolfdog has demonstrated that despite misconceptions, everyone has the right to pursue their journey to happiness, no matter how challenging it might be.
